Autograph envelope cover, addressed to 'Mrs Gaskell, Plymouth-Grove, Manchester', postmarked 6 April 1852, additionally inscribed 'Paid' upper left by Charlotte Bronte, an unperforated Penny Red stamp to right corner with postmarks, inscribed at upper centre in red ink in an unidentified near-contemporary hand, '(Charlotte Bronte / Currer Bell)', some soiling and marks, pasted to cut down Victorian album leaf, cover measures 60 x 99 mm Charlotte Bronte had completed the first draft of her novel Villette a month prior to this. She met Elizabeth Gaskell in August 1850, and they instantly became friends. Charlotte's father Patrick asked Mrs Gaskell to write Charlotte's biography after her death in 1855, this being published in 1857. (1)

A large mantel clock in the French Empire style, the lyre-shaped ormolu case with marble urn and ormolu finial, flanked by two fauns carrying a garland, standing on a shaped marble plinth on ormolu base with lion's paw feet. The key wind balance wheel movement strikes with two hammers on a bell. Condition. The case is in good condition apart from the garland which is detached at a joint, easily refixed. The German movement needs attention as the mainspring appears to be not locking on its pawl, making it not possible to check the operation. 34x19x61cm. high.
