A Regency mahogany and brass line inlaid lancet-shaped mantel clockRetailed by John Grant, Fleet Street, London, the movement by Handley & Moore, No. 3781The lancet-shaped case with brass line inlaid decoration and convex glazed brass bezel, flanked to each side by a lion's mask carrying handle and brass grille panel, the 8 in. white enamel dial, with later brass hands, signed GRANT Fleet Street London, with Roman chapters, the lancet-shaped twin train gut fusée movement, with foliate engraved border to the backplate and signed in an oval GRANT Fleet Street LONDON, stamped to the front plate HANDLEY & MOORE 3781, with anchor escapement and hour strike on a bell 44 cm. high, (one pendulum and key). Illustrated John Grant (d. 1810), an eminent maker, is recorded as a member of the Clockmakers' Company in 1781.Handley & Moore, apprenticed to Thwaites, supplied high quality movements to the trade.

A George III ormolu-mounted ebonised quarter-striking automaton clock with moonphase, calendar and sweep centre seconds.The case surmounted by a man standing beneath a cupola, striking a bell with each hand, via a linked hammer to the movement, above a square shaped galleried platform with urn finials, above an arch with four further finials, the front with foliate mounts and a shaped hinged door, flanked by canted angles with foliate mounts, the sides each with a brass carrying handle and a grille panel (one lost), on scrolled bracket feet; the shaped arched brass dial plate with 5 ½ in. white enamel dial, Roman chapters and Arabic five-minute markers, pierced gilt brass hands and sweep centre seconds, the arch centred by a shallow concave recess with moon phase shown as a rotating sphere, flanked to each side by white enamel subsidiaries for STRIKE/SILENT and the date of the moon, the fine-quality twin-train chain fusée movement, wound from the back, with verge escapement, foliate-engraved backplate, five turned pillars, intermediate wheelwork behind the dial for the moon phase and two link arms for the automaton striking63 cm. high, (one key). Illustrated This fine quality clock, with unusual dial arrangement, with its sweep centre seconds, moon phase and age, together with the fine quality wheelwork, would suggest a skilled London workshop. The case can be compared with another automaton clock by Robert Philip, London. The cases are virtually identical, utilising the same shaped design for the door, caryatids and with a standing figure beneath the cupola, which was sold at Bonhams, London, 6 July 2016, lot 75.

A George III mahogany triple-train musical automata table clock with pull-repeatBy Thomas Hunter, Junior, London, circa 1760The case with well-figured veneers, surmounted by a bell top, above a panel door with arched glazed panel, the sides each with a brass carrying handle above shaped rectangular panel, with glazed back door, on stepped plinth with brass bracket feet, the arched 7in. dial, finely painted with figures in arcadian landscapes, the arch painted with a harbour, a hill-top castle in the background, and with an automata of ships passing through, on the hour, above the silvered chapter ring, signed about the VI Thos Hunter Junr LONDON, with Roman chapters and Arabic five-minute numerals, pierced blued steel hands, and two subsidiaries at the base for Chime/Not Chime and A Dance/Happy Clown, the three train fusée movement with all-over foliate-engraved backplate, five knopped pillars, verge escapement and strike on a bell, with the music set off hourly, or on demand, and playing two tunes on a carillion of eight bells50cm. high. Illustrated Thomas Hunter Junior is recorded apprenticed 1734, gaining his freedom of the Clockmakers' Company in 1742, he worked from New Broad Street Buildings, was appointed Warden in 1762, then served as Master in 1765; he died in 1785.
