By 1838 the firm had become Howell, James & Co. with the partners now John Howell, William Sedgwick, Thomas Stroud and Henry Gillett although by 1855 the company was in the sole ownership of Gillett and in 1884 became a limited company known as Howell & James Ltd.

Gounouilhou et Francois a Geneve, an ebonised portico clock:, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel and adjustable beat to the pendulum crutch, the backplate signed Gounouilhou et Francois a Geneve, with a nine-rod compensating pendulum with a dual-metal bob, the round silvered dial engraved with black Roman numerals and an inset subsidiary seconds dial, with blued steel moon hands and engraved with the maker's name, the ebonised portico case having four tapered pillars with brass capitals of acanthus leaf decoration, with further decorative gilt-metal mounts to the base and standing on decorative cast brass feet, height 54.5cm. * Biography Gounouilhou & Francois were well-known Geneva makers working at Quai de l'Isle 241 making clocks and watches with complications as well as carriage clocks with both petite and grande-sonnerie. They exhibited at the l'Exposition Geneva in 1828. Pierre-Simon Gounouilhou was a French protestant, born in 1779, who was to have a major influence on the horological scene in Geneva; amongst his many achievements were watches constructed with quarter-chiming and Jaquemarts automata. He was a signatory on the petition, dated February 1829, to have a new observatory constructed.

Langford, London, an 18th century mahogany bracket clock: the eight-day duration, five-pillar double-fusee movement, now with an anchor escapement, having c-scroll and floral engraving to the backplate and striking the hours on a bell, the eight-inch break-arch brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and outer five-minute outer Arabic markings, the centre with a subsidiary date dial and engraved with the maker's name Thos. Langford, London, the arch with a silvered strike/silent dial and all with gilt-metal cast c-scroll and floral spandrels, with blued steel hands, the bell-top mahogany case with inset brass fretwork to the top corners, brass acorn finials to the top, a brass carrying handle, glazed side panels and standing on brass bracket feet, height 51cm, not including handle. * Biography Thomas Langford is recorded as becoming free of the Clockmakers Company in 1781 and took on a number of apprentices in the following years including William Whitaker and John Clark.
William Avenell, Alresford, an oak moonphase longcase clock: the eight-day duration five-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell, the eleven and a half inch brass break-arch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and outer five-minute numerals, with unusually the subsidiary strike/silent dial to the dial centre below XII o'clock with a date aperture above VI o'clock and shaped cartouche engraved with the maker's name Will. Avenall, Alresford, with a moonphase aperture to the arch and sweep seconds hand, the oak flat-topped case with fretwork to the hood and three-quarter columns with brass capitals, with a break-arch trunk door and plain base, height 202cm. * Biography William Avenall was a well-known maker recorded working in Old Alresford in circa 1760 with another of the same name known to be in Portsmouth in the early part of the 19th century.

Scobell, Colyton, an oak and mahogany longcase clock:, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch square painted dial having black Roman numerals, floral decoration to the corners, subsidiary seconds dial and blued steel hands, signed to the centre with the maker's name Jno. Scobell, Colyton, the falseplate to the dial embossed with the dial maker's name Walker & Hughes, B/Ham, the oak case with mahogany crossbanding, mahogany canted corners and diamond panels above and below the trunk door, all inlaid with decorative stringing, the flat-topped hood with tapered pillars having brass capitals, height 194cm. * Biography John Spurway Scobell was born in July 1799, the son of Joseph & Mary, and first listed as a clockmaker in Ottery St. Mary in 1830 before moving to Colyton a few years later, a clock signed by him at the latter town is dated for 1837.
Ralph Banks, Devonport, a mahogany longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the brass break-arch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, the centre with a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture and engraved Ralph Banks, Devonport, with an engraved boss to the arch, the mahogany case with wavy edge moulding to the hood door, fluted pillars and standing on bracket feet, 213cm. high. * Biography Ralph Banks is recorded working at Plymouth Dock (Devonport) often using clocks 'bought-in' from top London suppliers including John Thwaites. It is known that he married Rebecca Palmer Collings at Stoke Damerel parish church in December 1782 under whose name the business was listed in 1812.
