A fine George III ebonised table clock by Higgs and Evans London, circa late 18th century, the hour striking movements with five pillars, the strike rack controlled on a bell with twin fusee movement and verge escapement, the arched silvered dial with strike-silent subsidiary dial, above Roman and Arabic numerals, signed Higgs and Evans London to the centre, date aperture below, foliate engraved gilt metal back plate, with brass carry handle, raised on brass bracket feet with key, dial 15.5cm wide x 34cm high, repairers marks on the back of dial reads 'T Clark 1799', and others later indistinctFootnote: Higgs and Evans were first established in Sweetings Alley and later Royal Exchange from 1775-1825. This was the firm of Robert Higgs, Peter Higgs and Jas Evans. Jas Evans was working in London from 1749, Robert and Peter Higgs from 1770. CONDITION REPORT: Lot 291 - one larger crack and various small hairline cracks to ebony on arched top, brass corner to left back of frieze slightly bent down and chip to corner of wood, frieze slightly loose where back door hinge is loose, gilding rubbed, silvered face lightly scratched and tarnished, no key present to open front door, back door open and winder present, pendulum can't swing unless back door open, small scratches/cracks to ebony allover, strikes on single bell, clock goes when wound, pendulum moving, escapement moving also
