Miroy frères, Paris, a decorative striking carriage clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with push-button repeat at will, with the matt-gilt platform lever escapement having a plain brass balance, the backplate stamped with the serial number 3580 and engraved with the maker's name in script Miroy frères à Paris, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals, a subsidiary alarm dial, blued steel trefoil hands and signed Miroy frères à Paris, the cast brass case with floral and grape raised decoration (missing handle), height 18cm (handle up) 14.5cm (handle down).* Notes A number of carriage clocks have been noted signed for Miroy frères whose address is recorded as having been at rue d'Angoulême du Temple, Paris. It is known that they exhibited at the 1851 London Exhibition in Hyde Park.

Marti a Paris, a marble, bronze and ormolul mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, with an outside countwheel, the backplate stamped with the movement maker's trademark for Marti et Cie, Paris along with the serial number 8288, the round white enamel dial having black Roman hour numerals, Fd. Viteau, 7 Rue Vivienne, and with gilt-brass trefoil hands, the substantial white marble case inset with two tablets to the front and a further two to the sides depicting classical scenes involving an army of soldiers with horses and chariots, with ormolu mounts to the front and sides and female-head masks to the top four corners, surmounted by a bronze and ormolu figure of a boy playing a game of knuckle-bones, height 48cms.* Biography; Samuel Marti was one of the prolific French makers of the 1800's and was known to be working circa 1860 at Le Pays de Montbeliard, Paris making roulant blancs. Along with Japy Freres and Roux they set up a business in 1863 with an address in rue Turenne to market their movements to such firms as L'Epee. Their own Paris address was Rue Vieille-du-Temple from 1870.

Richard et Cie, Paris, a French gilt ormolu mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with the backplate stamped with the trademark for Richard et Cie, the initials R.C. either side of a coiling serpent, stamped with the serial number 2102, which is repeated to the brass pendulum bob and rear of the case, the arched blue porcelain dial having black Roman numerals within individual white plaques, gilt-brass hands and decorated to the centre with a rural scene and to the lower portion with a scene depicting two ladies seated on a wall and fishing in a stream, the gilded ormolu case with various floral asymmetric mounts and moulding's, surmounted by a matching blue porcelain and ormolu urn and standing on ormolu bun feet, standing on a shaped giltwood base with bun feet, complete with an ebonised oval base and glass dome, height 36 cms (clock); 41cm (inc. base); 46cm (base and dome)* Biography Richard et Cie, recorded at rue Bondy 32, Paris, were one of the most well-known makers and retailers of clocks with a retail outlet at Cannon Street, London. This trademark indicates the clock was made, or finished, by them as opposed to just being retailed

Edmund Appley at Charing Cross, a late 17th century ebonised basket-top bracket clock: the eight-day duration, double-fusee, five-pillar movement having a verge escapement, striking the hours on a bell and repeating the quarters at will on a nest of three bells, the backplate engraved with floral decoration and signed Edmund Appley at Charing Cross, the six and a half inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, outer Arabic five-minute numerals and meeting-arrow-head half-hour markings, the matted dial centre having a date aperture below XII o'clock, with cast-brass cherub-head spandrels to the four corners and decorative blued steel hands, with a strike/silent lever to the edge, the ebonised case with brass filigree basket work to the caddy-top, brass filigree mounts to the case front and surmounted by a brass carrying handle, height 37 cms (handle up), 33 cms (handle down).* Biography Edmund Appley was a fine maker who was born in Westmoreland and moved to London where he was apprenticed in 1670 to Jeffrey Bayley. He was free of the Clockmakers Company in 1678 where he worked in Charing Cross and died in 1688 on a visit to Edinburgh.

Richard Peckover, London, a miniature lantern clock: the three and a half inch break-arch brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with Turkish hour numerals and outer five-minute markings, with a matted dial-centre and cast-brass floral spandrels to the four corners, the arch having a round silvered boss engraved with the name Richard Peckover, London, 480, with later decorative blued-steel hands, the brass case with turned pillars to the four corners surmounted by further turned finials, surmounted by a bell beneath four brass bell straps, with a cast-brass finial to the centre, with cast cresting to the case sides and brass doors engraved with further decoration, the later thirty-hour, weight-driven movement striking the hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, height 214 cms.*Biography Richard Peckover is recorded as working at Change Alley, London in circa 1735 and Royal Exchange in 1751. It is quite probable that he took over the business of Quare and Horsman in 1733.

Thomas Savidge, Exeter, a brass lantern clock: the thirty-hour weight driven movement striking the hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the five and a half inch dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman hour numerals and wheat-ear half-hour markings, the centre engraved with tulip decoration and the name Thos. Savidge, Exeter, with engraved floral decoration to the four corners and a single steel hand, the brass case with pillars to the four corners surmounted by cast finials, with engraved front cresting and further cresting to the sides and surmounted by four bell-straps beneath which sits the bell, with a further finial to the top, height 37.5 cms. (with restorations)*Biography Thomas Savage is recorded as working in Exeter from the mid-1670's having possibly been apprenticed in London to Joseph Quash on the 1st of March 1659. He held Jacobite sympathies and was gaoled in May 1691 and again in May 1692, after which he may well have left Exeter and returned to work in London.

Samuel Barrow, London, a lacquered longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement having five finned pillars and striking the hours on a bell with an inside countwheel, the eleven-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring with meeting-arrow-head half-hour markings and a thin outer aspect engraved with Arabic five-minute numerals, the matted dial centre having ringed winding holes, engraved tulip decoration to the outside, a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture surrounded with engraved decoration and signed either side of VI o'clock Samuel Barrow at the Hermitage, London, with cast-brass cherub-head spandrels to the four corners and blued steel hands, the black lacquered case with raised gilt chinoiserie decoration to the trunk door and base, with further decoration to the case, a round lenticular glass to the door, the flat-topped hood with three-quarter columns, height 214cm.* Biography Samuel Barrow is recorded as being apprenticed in 1688 to John Barrow, possibly his father, becoming free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1696 until circa 1704. He worked at The Sign of the Spring Clock in East Smithfield near Hermitage Bridge, London, being a bridge over a tributary running into the River Thames.

Edward Blowers, Beccles, a mahogany longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch break-arch brass dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, outer Arabic five-minute numerals, with cast-brass c-scroll corner spandrels, the matted centre with subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, with a convex brass bob within the arch engraved with the maker's name Edwd. Blowers, Beccles, the mahogany case having typical Suffolk cresting to the top surmounted with three brass ball-and-spire finials, fluted pillars to the hood with cast-brass capitals, a break-arch door to the trunk, boxwood edging to the edges, and a plain base with bracket feet, height 218 cms.* Biography Edward Blowers is recorded as working in Beccles, Suffolk in the second half of the 18th century, primarily as a maker of longcase clocks.

Oliver, Enniskellen, a mahogany longcase clock: having an eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the fourteen-inch square brass dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals with the maker's name 'Oliver, Enniskellen' either side of VI o'clock, torch half-hour markings and meeting-arrow-head quarter-half-hour markings, the matted centre with ringed winding holes, a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, with cast-brass cherub-and-crown spandrels to the four corners, the cross-banded mahogany case of typical Irish form with the pediment top having greek-key moulding, fluted pillars to the hood with fluted canted corners behind, fluted canted corners to the trunk and shaped top to the door, the panelled base with fluted quarter-columns and standing on bracket feet, height 236 cms.* Biography Charles Oliver is recorded as working in Enniskellen from circa 1770 until at least 1775.

Pain, London either side of VI o'clock, the matted dial centre with ringed winding holes and subsidiary seconds and date dials, with restorations, with cast-brass acorn-leaf spandrels to the four corners, engraved to the edge with tulip decoration, with decorative blued-steel hands and a cast brass decorative boss to the added arch with cast-brass dolphin spandrels, the flat-topped walnut case with double cross-banding to the trunk door and base, the hood having turned tapered columns with cast-brass capitals and wooden fret-work above the dial, all standing on a double-plinth to the base, height 229cm.*Notes Various makers named William Pain are recorded as working in London in the 18th century.

William Ray, Sudbury, an oak longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch break-arch brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman hour numerals and Arabic five-minute outer numerals, with cast-brass c-scroll spandrels to the four corners, the silvered centre engraved with c-scroll decoration and with subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, with decorative blued steel hands and a round boss to the arch engraved with the makers name Willm. Ray, Sudbury, with cast-brass c-scroll spandrels to either side, the oak case having a curved pediment with turned wooden finial to the hood, with the three-quarter fluted hood pillars having cast-brass capitals, with a shaped top to the trunk door and a plain base, height 206cm.* Biography William Ray, born 1734, the son of the clockmaker Daniel, married Mary Munnings at Lavenham on the 13th April 1758 with whom he had six children, two of which, William Redmore (born 1762) and Daniel (born 1763), became clockmakers. In 1778 William was admitted as a Burgess of the Borough of Sudbury. He was buried in St. Peter's Church, the place of his baptism, on the 24th of July 1808 with his wife buried there in April 1810. The business premises were in the centre of Market Hill, next to the Moot Hall, but were demolished in 1840. Various longcases of superior quality are known. (Suffolk Clocks & Clockmakers; Arthur L. Richard Rooker, London, a walnut marquetry longcase clock: the eight day duration, six-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell with an inside countwheel, with a removable plate to the front-plate for adjustment of the striking train, the ten-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, outer five-minute numerals, meeting arrow-head half-hour markings and engraved either side of VI o'clock Richard Rooker, the matted dial centre with ringed winding holes, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture with engraved surround and two subsidiary levers for to strike (strike/silent) and Winde up (to operate the shuttered winding holes), with blued steel hands and cast-brass cherub-head spandrels to the four corners, the walnut case inlaid with panelled bird-and-flower marquetry decoration to the trunk, with matching inlay to the base, hood and convex throat moulding, the flat-topped hood having barley-twist columns with giltwood capitals, and fretwork to the top frieze, the trunk with a bulls-eye glass to the centre and panelled sides, all standing on bun feet (the case with restorations), height 185 cms.*Biography Richard Rooker is recorded as working in London at King Street, West Smithfield having been apprenticed to the well known John Clowes in 1686. He was free of the Clockmakers Company in 1694 and was still known to be working in 1748 by which time he may well have been working with his son, also Richard, in Chelsea.

Bramley, Andover, a mahogany moon-phase longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch break-arch painted dial having black Roman hour numerals and Arabic five-minute outer numerals, floral decoration to the four corners and centre and with subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, signed with the maker's name Bramley, Andover, with decorative blued steel hands, with a moon-phase disc to the arch painted with a seascape and rural scene, the falseplate to the dial rear embossed with the dialmaker's name Osborne's Manufactory Birmingham, the mahogany case having boxwood edge-lining to the trunk and pagoda top, inlaid stringing to the base, fluted pillars to the hood with cast-brass capitals and standing on bracket feet, height 227cm.* Biography J. Bramley is recorded as working in circa 1792, followed by Thomas Bramley at various addresses within the town from circa 1867 until 1878, the former being the likely maker of this clock. * James Osborne was a well known maker and pioneer of quality painted dials in Birmingham having been in partnership until 1777 with that other fine maker Wilson. He died in 1779 with the business taken over by his widow Ann followed by his sons until 1813.

Henry Swaine, Hillparton, a quarter-chiming longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell and the quarters on a nest of eight bells, the associated square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, Arabic five-minute numerals to the outer aspect, fleur-de-lys half-hour markings and signed either side of VI o'clock Hen. Swaine, Hillparton, the matted dial centre having engraved decoration to the date aperture, with cast-brass cherub-and-crown spandrels to the four corners and blued steel hands, with wheat-ear border engraving, the oak case profusely carved with bird and floral decoration, having a flat top to the hood with curved pediment and barley-twist columns, and standing on bracket feet, height 212cm.* Biography The Bath & Wells Diocese records show that Henry Swaine, clockmaker from Hilperton, married Mary Tily, a widow from Laverton, Somerset, in 1714. Maurice Canning Wilks ARHA RUA (1911-1984) The Fishermen Returning Home oil on canvas signed lower right 35½ x 51½cm (14 x 20in) Private CollectionMaurice C. Wilks was born in Belfast 1911, the son of a linen designer. He received his academic education at Malone Public School, Belfast and at Belfast College of Art. Wilks was only nineteen when he won the Dunville scholarship. He later exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin and also at the Oireachtas. In his early years as an artist he resided in Cushendun, in the Glens of Antrim. He has sketched and painted all over Ireland, but he especially liked the atmosphere of Donegal and the West of Ireland. He exhibited in London, Montreal, Boston and Toronto and his paintings have been shown at the Royal Academy, London. He had several one man exhibitions at the Victor Waddington Galleries, Dublin, and in more recent years at the Walker Gallery, Coleraine; The Malone Gallery, Belfast; The Bell Gallery, Belfast and at the Oriel Gallery, Dublin. In his later years he had a summer studio at Sutton, County Dublin which enabled him to paint many scenes of Dublin and Dublin Bay. He is represented an many public and private collections including the Ulster Museum, Armagh County Museum and the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.
