Found Canterbury area, Kent, UK, 1980s. The cathedral of York Minster has suffered several fires, both deliberate and accidental, over recent centuries; an arson attack in 1829 resulted in watchmen being employed overnight. This piece was obviously let into a piece of oak from the belfry roof (various pieces made from oak and bell metal recovered from the area of the fire, such as snuffboxes, are recorded), either as a souvenir to raise much needed funds for repair or for presentation. More recently, the Minster was again badly damaged by fire on 9 July 1984. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
