'The Case of the Borough of Saltash, in the County of Cornwall'. Volumes bound in one. Original binding relaid.Saltash was a ‘’Rotten Borough’’ in Cornwall, which returned two members of parliament to the House of Commons in the English and later British parliament from 1552 to 1832 When it was abolished by the Great Reform Act. Like most of the Cornish boroughs enfranchised or re-enfranchised during the tudor period, it wad a rotten borough from the start. Saltast was a Burgage Borough, meaning that the right to vote rested with the tenants of certain specified properties. For a long period in the 18th century there was a contest for control of the borough between the Government and the Buller family of Morval (some 14 miles away). Depending partly on legal uncertainities over the precise number and identity of the burgage properties, to which vote were attached. In the 1760’s it was considered an entirely secure Admiralty Borough, where the naval influence could sway all the voters, but by 1831 the Bullers owned all the tenancies and considered them the patrons. This is a faithfull copy by John Kipling ,1785, Clerk of the Rolls. 159 pages plus title page, with fold out tables, copy of poll for 1713 and instructions for a poll att an eleconn for 2 members to serve in next parliament. Reed, Law Bookseller, Bell-Yard, Temple-Bar, London. ‘’The final object of the enquiry in this case was to ascertain in whom the elective franchise was vested…. at the time Saltash was first represented in parliament’’ : P. VII.. from elizabeth 1st to the very late 18th century, 231 pages, with the stamp and bookplate of The Birmingham Law Society, original morocco boards with gilt lettering on the front cover and gilt motif of the society on the back cover, with a little foxing (given the age not surprising), overall a very good copy.

The 12-inch arched dial set with a painted automata scene depicting a constantly rocking couple on a see-saw with a working windmill behind them; on the hour, an apparently shut door in the miller's house to the left opens and the miller appears dressed in his white clothes, all over a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, recessed subsidiary seconds dial and applied nameplate. The movement with five knopped pillars, anchor escapement and rack striking on a bell, the levers for the automata set behind the dial (sprung door in need of attention). Iden to the vendors grandfather in 1942. Further accompanied by a letter from Iden offering to buy it back again in 1944.Thomas Tompion, London The rising hood with later, pre-numbered carved cresting over long glazed side panels, spirally twisted front columns, convex throat moulding and long (41.5 inch) door inlaid with two geometric stars framed by inlaid corner pieces and a half-round moulded edge, all centred by an unusual octagonal lenticle, over a matching base with stellar inlay to a plain plinth. The 10 inch square brass dial with a single line border enclosing the winged cherubs head spandrels and narrow silvered chapter ring with Arabic minute track, narrow Roman hours and an inner quarter-hour track, the finely matted centre with narrow Arabic seconds ring and chamfered date aperture, and three blued steel hands. Signed along the lower edge Thomas Tompion Londini fecit. Mounted to the movement via four latched dial feet. The eight day weight-driven movement with thick plates united by six knopped and ringed latched pillars, the going train with anchor escapement, the striking train with inside countwheel and detent striking on the deep bell above. The 13 inch rectangular arched dial set to the top with a hand painted maritime scene featuring four three-masted ships in full sail on choppy waters, around them three smaller manned row boats try in vain to spear a whale blowing a plume of water in the distance, an albatross and pair of polar bears look on, the whole scene overseen by the figure of Mercury hovering in the cloudy sky above, all participants rocking in time with the pendulum.
