Drocourt, Paris, an engraved carriage clock: the eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, the backplate stamped with the trademark for the Parisian carriage clock maker, Alfred Drocourt, along with the serial number 10017, the front plate stamped with the initials H.L. for the maker of the blanc roulant, Holingue frères, the white enamel dial having black Roman hour numerals and blued steel moon hands, with a subsidiary alarm dial, the Gorge case fully engraved with floral decoration, height 14cms (handle up) 12cms (handle down).* Biography Pierre Drocourt, born 1819, founded the Drocourt clockmaking business in Paris in 1853 with his son Alfred, born 1847, taking over in 1872. The blancs roulants, rough movements, were made in Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, a town outside Dieppe, before being finished at the workshops at Rue Debelleyme, Paris, previously Rue Limoges.

Japy frères, a French gilt-metal and alabaster mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, with an outside countwheel, the backplate stamped with the initial B within a circle along with the trademark of the maker of the blanc roulant, Japy frères and serial number 15135, the white enamel dial having black Roman numerals and blued steel moon hands, the shaped alabaster case with floral gilt-metal mounts to the front, scroll mounts to the sides and surmounted by a pair of gilt-metal birds, height 33cms., complete with base and glass dome.* Biography Japy frères were founded by Frederic Japy of Beaucount, born 1749 who first made movements for the clock industry at his factory in 1777, becoming the largest and most commercially important clockmaking concern in France. The business continued after his death.

Moyson et Cie, d'Anvers, the substantial white bisque case decorated with three putti bearing fruit and standing on a round white marble base, with applied gilt-metal mount and standing on decorative gilded feet, height 40cms.

Vincenti, Paris a three-piece clock garniture: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the maker Vincenti et Cie, along with the serial number 5215, the round white enamel dial having black Arabic hour numerals and decorative gilt-brass pierced and engraved hands, the case of two ormolu cherubs leaning on the clock and standing on a shaped white marble base with an ormolu mount to the front depicting a swag of material with inset pierced mounts to the curved sides, all standing on ormolu feet, with two matching two-light candelabra side pieces, height 32cms (clock) 29cms (candelabra)* Biography Vincenti set up his factory producing blancs roulants in Montbeliard in 1823 but went bankrupt a year later, whereupon the clock manufacturer Roux took on the management. They were awarded silver medals for their movements at the Paris Exhibitions of 1824 and 1855. Vincenti died in 1834.

Anton Kolb, Vienna, a baroque grande-sonnerie ebonised bracket clock: the movement having a verge escapement and Viennese grande-sonnerie strike on two bells, sounding the quarter and last hour at each quarter, the backplate fully engraved with floral decoration, the engraved seven-inch brass break-arch dial having a silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, Arabic outer five minute numerals and with the maker's name Ant Kolb in Wien engraved either side of VI o'clock, having two subsidiary dials to the arch for 'Schlag Nicht/Schlagt' and 'Repetiert/Repet Nicht' along with a further decorative central boss, the dial centre with date aperture and a false pendulum aperture, with decorative brass hands, the bell-top ebonised case with applied giltwood decorative edges of the door, a gilded brass floral mount to the front of the top, cast-brass corner finials and surmounted by a cast-brass decorative handle, height 52cms (inc. handle).* Biography Anton Kolb is recorded as working in Laxenburg, a town outside Vienna, from 1781 until at least 1854.

Upjohn, Exeter, a small striking mahogany wall clock: the eight-day duration, weight-driven movement striking the hours on a bell, the nine-and-a-half inch round painted dial having black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and signed Upjohn, Exeter, the mahogany case having a long drop with a curved into-the-wall base, with a round hood, height 120cm.* Biography The Upjohn family were a well-known and prolific family of clockmakers working in both Exeter and London, with James Upjohn of Red Lion Square, born 1822, having travelled extensively in Europe when trying to promote his business to a wider field. The Exeter branch of the family included, amongst others, William Upjohn, baptised in 1754 and who moved to London in 1803; John Upjohn, born 1771, who married Maria Wittingham before moving to London, when on his return in 1803 he took over the premises of William before dying in 1848 'after a long and painful illness, borne with Christian fortitude'; their son Robert Wittingham Upjohn, also a chronometer maker born 1807, who took over from his father as keeper of the Exeter Cathedral clock where his initials can be found carved and dated 1824.

Samuel Atkinson, Bridlington, a mahogany longcase clock: the eight-day duration, five-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell, the 11½ inch break-arch brass dial having a silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and Arabic five-minute outer numerals, the matted centre having a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, with floral and c-scroll cast-brass spandrels to the four corners, with an applied silvered plaque to the centre engraved with the maker's name Saml. Atkinson, Bridlington, the arch having a silvered dial for setting strike/silent, with cast-brass dolphin spandrels to the sides, the mahogany case having satinwood quartered columns with cast-brass Corinthian capitals to the trunk, with oval inlaid panel to the trunk door, the hood having a pagoda top with brass ball-and-spire finials and having fluted columns with cast-brass capitals, the base with shaped crossbanding and standing on bracket feet, height 226cms.* Biography Samuel Atkinson is recorded as working in Bridlington, Yorkshire from before 1760 until at least 1780 with his son, also Samuel born 1772, continuing as a clockmaker in the same town.* Notes Reference, Brian Loomes, Clockmaker and Watchmakers of the World. Penford, London, the matted dial centre having a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture with engraved decoration to the surround and ringed winding holes, the cast-brass 'cherub-head' spandrels to the four corners having engraved floral decoration between and decorative blued steel hands, the walnut veneered case with panelled marquetry decoration to the trunk door and base, with further marquetry inlay to the trunk and a lenticle glass to the door, the flat-top hood with three-quarter pillars having cast brass capitals and marquetry inlay to the door, the base with a later applied plinth, with a pair of brass cased weights, height 213cms.* Biography Joshua Penford (sometime Penfold) is recorded as being apprenticed in London in 1684 to the Quaker clockmaker Francis Stamper 'At the Golden Ball in Lombard Street', becoming a Freeman of the Clockmakers Company in 1695.

John Sampson, Penzance, a mahogany longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the 11½ inch arched brass dial having a silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman hour numerals and outer Arabic five-minute markings, with the maker's name John Sampson, Penzance either side of VI o'clock, the matted centre having a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture with engraved decorative surround, with decorative blued steel hands and cast-brass 'urn' spandrels to the four corners, the arch having a silvered boss engraved with a Ho-ho bird above the latin words Tempus Fugit, with cast-brass 'dolphin' spandrels to each side, the mahogany case with inlaid stringing to the hood, trunk and base, the hood having a swan-neck pediment with brass paterae and ebonised fluted columns with cast-brass capitals, all standing on bracket feet, height 206cms.* Biography John Sampson is recorded as working in Penzance from at least April 1752 when he advertised for 'any young man bred in the clock and watchmaking way wanting employment'.
