A small mixed lot of detecting finds. Within this lot, an incomplete cast copper-alloy Late Bronze Age socketed axe (c. 1000-800 BC), a Roman or Early Medieval openwork bell, a decorated Early Anglo-Saxon disc type brooch decorated with multiple punched ring-dot motifs (c. AD 450-600) and a decorated copper-alloy Late Medieval dagger chape. Condition: generally good, the brooch treated. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist, from various locations. The axe from Hampshire, the brooch Rochester, Kent, and the chape reportedly a Thames find.
A complete cast copper-alloy crotal type bell of later 18th or early 19th century date, c. 1770-1813. The bell is of larger size than normal, being spherical with a squared suspension loop at its apex, a prominent midrib dividing its sound-chamber in two, and a slit at its base. The lower hemisphere of the bell demonstrates incised decoration in the form of petal motifs, which flank the foundry mark at the base-the latter taking the form of the initials W G, each letter flanked by two annulets. Condition: good, even green patina, iron pea retained inside. Length from suspension loop to base: c. 60mm. Discussion: the foundry mark on this bell identifies it as a product of William Gwynn, working out of Aldbourne, Wiltshire, between c. 1770 and 1813. Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
