Maker of gold and silver watches, jewellery and silver plate. The business grew into one of the largest jewellers in the north of England. Rhodes died in March 1881 and in 1888 the firm became Manoah Rhodes & Sons Ltd.

Bell studied the brain and the nervous system throughout his life and discovered the two distinct types of nerves, sensory and motor.
