c1950s 'Farometer' TAXI METER by Bell Punch Co Ltd. A clockwork/electro-mechanical meter with clockwork winding handle on the reverse. In working order, mounted on a display plinth, inside which is a small electric motor, powered by 2 x 9V batteries, which drives the mechanical mechanism. The side handle sets 'For Hire', 'Hired' and 'Stopped'. Selecting 'For Hire' starts the fare at 2/6d and the machine ticks. Pressing the button on the plinth mimics the driving distance and increases the fare in 4d steps. Stands 14" (36cm) high. Hours of fun! [1]

An important collection of note and sketch books belonging to the archaeologist and author Hodder Michael Westropp (b.1820 County Cork, Ireland, - 1884). Educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Hodder M Westropp wrote what is probably the first handbook of archaeology ever produced, added to Petrie's work on Irish Round Towers and defined the term Mesolithic*. Fourteen note/sketch books, these mostly black morocco bound, filled with pencil notes and sketches in Hodder Westropp's hand, largely of an academic nature covering archaeology, gems, comparative religion etc..., it seems probable that the notes and sketches included material used in his many publications and lectures.**, together with a hand-written volume "Gems and Precious Stones in the Collection of Hodder M Westropp", a 62 page gilt tooled black morocco bound notebook inscribed to single side only, and a scrap album containing printed lecture promotional papers et al.
