[TRAVEL & EXPLORATION]. -- ROGERS, Woodes. A Cruising Voyage Round the World: First to the South Sea, thence to the East Indies.... Second edition. London: For Andrew Bell and Bernard Lintot, 1718.8vo (195 x 107 mm). 5 copper engraved maps. (6 1/2-in tear to world map repaired verso). Contemporary calf (old rebacking to style, upper joint starting, some overall wear).  Second edition, preceded by the first edition of 1712. Rogers' privately funded voyage was more financially successful than any since Drake and Cavendish; Rogers maintained good order despite a "mongrel crew and with officers often mutinous." Privateer William Dampier was pilot and navigator (see lot 53). After they rounded Cape Horn, they sheltered at Juan Fernandez; there, they rescued Alexander Selkirk, whose story (as told by Rogers) was an inspiration for Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. Their attack on Spanish ships on the west coast of Mexico and South America resulted in the taking of an Acapulco galleon (among others), whose bounty included important information in the form of maps. Contemporary diced russia gilt, smooth spines gilt, black morocco lettering-pieces gilt, edges stained yellow.  Provenance: Unidentified signature (note about acquisition of the set from Maggs Bros., 1996).Fourth edition of Thomson's  System of Chemistry, which helped secure his reputation in the field, and which would go through 6 separate editions, and which also appeared in French and German. Thomson's reference was based not just on standard compilations, but also a wide range of recent papers. Robert Patrick wore this helmet at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) for digital laser scanning, which contributed to the film's breakthrough "liquid metal" CG effects. It appeared in The Making of Terminator 2: Judgment Day documentary. The fibreglass and resin Bell police motorcycle helmet was modified for the digital scanning process, with white paint applied over the dark areas and several "X" markings in blue marker. It is marked "7 3/8, 59" on the interior and lined with padded foam. It comes with a custom-made display head featuring Patrick's likeness, complete with sunglasses. Gargoyles adorned the cathedral's bell tower, seen in the climactic showdown between Napier/The Joker, Batman (Michael Keaton), and Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger). Lieutenant Max Eckhardt (William Hootkins) handed "Wanted" posters to police officers before the Axis Chemicals raid.The menacing gargoyle is made of grey-painted cast concrete. The poster is printed in black-and-white and includes two mugshot photos of Napier along with personal information. The gargoyle displays minor cracks and damage to one ear, while the poster has light edge wear. Wax is applied to the figure to produce a smooth exterior, and there are remnants of black paint. The statue displays signs of age and some minor chipped sections. A GEORGE II WALNUT MONTH GOING LONGCASE CLOCK BY CLAUDE VIET LONDON, C.1725 the brass month going movement with four turned and finned pillars and with an anchor escapement striking on a bell, the twelve inch arched dial with a silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals and with a matted centre with a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, the winding holes with moulded edges, with pierced and scroll blued steel hands, with gilt mask spandrels, the arch with cornucopia spandrels and with a signature panel 'Claude Viet London', the burr veneered case with a moulded and fret carved hood with urn finials and with a pair of columns, the arched quarter veneered trunk door above a panelled plinth base 253.5cm high Provenance Upper Slaughter Manor, The Collection of Micheál and Elizabeth Feller. Catalogue Note Claude Viet was a Huguenot clockmaker originally from Orléans who moved to London. In 1698 Viet was free from the Watchmaker's Company. He was active between the end of the 17th to the early part of the 18th century and was watchmaker to Queen Anne. He died in 1734.

Catalogue Note The house depicted in this sampler is know as Essex House and can be found in Fore Street, Chard. There are records of a Mary Keetch (not Ketch) born in Chard on the 19th December 1808.
