Crowley (Aleister) Why Jesus Wept, first edition, initialed presentation inscription from the author "W. J. W. startles the Belle (touches the clitoris as they say at the White Cat) This, then to startle you. A. C." to endpaper, some light scattered spotting, 1 gathering loose, note in pencil in Crowley's hand "M. H. Bell Htl. de la Haute Loire Bd. Raspail" loosely inserted, original Japanese vellum wrappers, largely unopened, spine browned with ends chipped, browning and soiling to covers, preserved in custom drop-back box, [Yorke 19a], 4to, Privately Printed, 1904.⁂ The rare first edition of this religious satire by Crowley with a typically enigmatic and risqué inscription. We can trace no other inscribed copy. This copy without the two printed inserts (often lacking). A loosely inserted bookseller's description intriguingly gives the provenance as by descent through the family of Clive and Vanessa Bell.

E 8TH NOR FUS”; fibre identity disc “LIEUT R N MILLER CE 4 NF”; other ranks alloy identity tag engraved “PTE A G C HARLOCK 48214 CE 11/NORTH FUS”; crude example fashioned from a French copper coin, scratched to the reverse “J.A.E. BELL 5404 CE 13 N.F” and brass oval wrist disc indented “C.Q.M.S A JAY CE 1/8 R.WAR.R”. All generally good condition. (6 items)

British Royal Navy Admiralty Issue Bell, large brass naval ships bell with impressed Admiralty pattern broad arrow mark. Complete with the original clanger and the bracket mounting. Good untouched example. Ships names were omitted from bell’s as to stop the use of the loss of a ship being used for enemy propaganda reasons. PLEASE NOTE VERY HEAVY, WE ARE NOT ABLE TO OFFER IN HOUSE POST AND PACKING.

Interesting WW2 Memorial Bell of Intelligence Corps Interest, the cast brass bell has impressed to the front section “LIEUT DENYS G.T. RICHARD INTELLIGENCE CORPS DIED NEAR BEIRUT 1942” above this is a outline in red of the Welsh Dragon and above this “EMMANUEL COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE 1937-1940”, “LEIGHTON PARK SCHOOL 1933-37” and “MERCHANT NAVY CADET 1939”. The bell shows some wear and the top section has been painted black at some point. Complete with a makeshift clanger. Lieutenant Denys Graeme Temple Richard was born in Cardiff, he studied Economics and History at Emmanuel College Cambridge. He originally served as an officer with the Welch regiment before being attached to the Intelligence Corps. Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists him as died on 28th August 1942 and is buried at Beirut War Cemetery, Lebanon. Worthy of further research.

A George III mahogany and oak long case clock, the square enamel dial painted with floral spandrels, Arabic numerals, date aperture, eight day two train movement with bell strike, the hood with broken arch pediment, raised on brass caped fluted columns, the case door inlaid with shell paterea, flanked by quarter pilasters, with pendulum, no key, 203.5cm high. N.B. Samuel Deacon was born in Leicestershire in 1746 and was head of the celebrated family of watch and clock makers working at Barton-in-the-Beans from 1771 until 1951. Leicestershire Museums have a collection of his clocks and workshop tools, etc,. He is well documented.

A George III mahogany, 8-day longcase clock by ‘Harrison, Liverpool’, the hood with a broken swan-neck pediment and fluted columns, enclosing a 13” brass dial, with relief moulded ‘C’ and foliate scroll spandrels, signed and with a rising moon-phase in the arch, engraved ‘On time uncertain date eternal hours depend’, with a subsidiary dial for seconds below and a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, Arabic 5 minute markers and on the inside circumference the date, the trunk with a long, flame figured trunk door, the base with a raised, razor blade shaped panel, the 8-day movement with anchor escapement, striking on a bell, minor damage and restoration, lacking elements, 228cm high, with associated winder, later pendulum and two weightsFootnote: Probably Thomas Harrison (1777-1805), Fetter Lane. Clock and watch maker. Apprenticed to his father in 1777 and granted freedom of the company on the 6th of March, 1786. At 68 Fetter Lane from 1795-1804.Condition report: Chips, including two 1cm sections on the right side of the hood, each at the end of a crack from front to back. Also, 5cm x 0.5cm section of return bead on left side of hood. Lacking one entablature on 2nd pillar from the left. Pillars chipped, including base of same pillar lacking left corner. Bottom left corner of trunk door chipped. Lacking return moulds left and right of base and feet and finials. Some water marks on base. Restorations, including right return of hood re-stuck at the back.Movement/dial – lacking seconds and minute hands and connection for former to the movement. Not operational in vendor’s home.
