WOYO POT LIDThe Woyo of Cabinda used a pictographic language to convey feelings about specific social situations. Wooden pot lids with motifs carved in relief conveyed messages usually between a husband and wife but sometimes between parents and son or daughter. The lids were placed on the clay pots in which a wife would usually carry the food for her husband to the men’s communal dining space. The lid would convey her feelings and a husband might place a lid on a pot before returning it to his wife to convey his message. A young woman obtained her initial supply of pot lids from her mother and grandmother at the time of her marriage together with advice concerning their use. If a suitable pot lid was not available to convey a particular message it was made to order. The complainant would seek the advice of nkotikuanda, the village sage whose instructions were conveyed to the local sculptor. If the message was too complicated for the recipient to read he would visit the nkotikuanda for a translation. Interpretation of individual lids is difficult without detailed knowledge of the language used but the lids contained messages conveyed with each individual element as well as a more general message conveyed by the combination of elements.“But here is a strange thing: in the corner of the hut, a disc of black wood, about twenty centimetres wide. On one of its sides, figures in relief: a spiral, a half-ellipse, a sort of hook forming an acute accent. - What's this? - A lid. You find such lids everywhere in the region from the sea to Mayumbe. And as it is clear that I am interested in local things, pot lids come out of all the boxes: two first, then five, then ten; and it continues: it would be up to me to buy all the objects in the village.The lids are now passed from hand to hand.There is this one dominated by a sort of pyramid; it represents a tomb and reminds its owner that to enjoy, after her death, a beautiful tomb like this, she must have many children... and that if she does not have children, she will be forgotten after her death.There is this other one which represents an open trap; morality: for the trap to work... you must first set it. There is this other one which shows a standing bird: “when the bird is at the top of the termite mound it sees what is happening”; popular wisdom translates: we must take a step back to judge events. Ragg Tuning Forks Ltd (Sheffield) Speed Camera Calibration Set consisting of five tuning forks for speeds 60mph (439.4Hz), 50 (366.2), 40 (293), 30 (219.7) and 20 (146.5) with striking block, in fitted case. Also included a Test Report from the National Physical Laboratory dated 10th December 1957 stating the measured frequency of the five forks; Tuning Fork Used To Tune The Ships Bell On HMS Sheffield Town class cruiser commissioned in 1937 and took part in action against the Bismarck (1941), the fork is stamped 'Old Philharmonic' and 'C#', mounted on card with label 'The Stainless Steel Ship's Bell On HM Cruiser "Sheffield" Was Tuned To This Fork In 1937' 5 3/4", 14cm long; together with a large quantity of assorted Tuning Forks by Ragg Tuning Forks Ltd and three Catalogues (qty)A collection of vintage tuning forks from the archive of the original Ragg family owners. Tuning forks are generally associated with music as they originated for that purpose in the early 18th Century although they have been adapted over subsequent years for many different scientific and medical applications including sound therapy. The Ragg family commenced manufacture of tuning forks in Sheffield in 1840 and became the sole UK producer in the early 20th century. The collection in the auction includes tuning forks manufactured for a wide variety of specialist uses over many years up to the 1970’s. Particularly interesting applications include a set of tuning forks from the 1950’s for checking early police speed “radars” (roadside speed cameras nowadays) and a variety of vintage and specialist forks for medical and scientific applications including a “stroboscope” fork for checking Post Office telex calibration.

The pendant husks to the right of one have been slightly bent. There is a patera detached from one swag. Some rubbing and wear to the gilt, chips and losses in places and signs of refreshing to cover some losses, some signs of underlying bole showing through in places. general uneveness to the gilt surface which benefit from a clean and refreshment.Some chips and lossesMarginal plates appear old and could well be original, some depletion and bloom, the central plate of one is heavily bevelled and is likely a later replacement, the central plate to the other is more shallowly bevelled and could be original (though Dreweatts gives no guarantees). Gilbert, 'Chippendale's Brocket Hall Saloon Suite', Christie's International Magazine, June- July 1994, pp. 46-49.  Thomas Chippendale's commission for Viscount Melbourne at Brocket Hall was delivered in a concentrated period from about 1772 until 1775, alongside furniture made for Melbourne House, Piccadilly (now Albany), which Melbourne bought from Lord Holland in 1771. And while both commissions were not as large or as lengthy as those for his major Yorkshire patrons, the seat furniture he made for the Drawing Room at Brocket originally comprised twelve armchairs, twelve side chairs and four settees, which is the largest salon suite Chippendale provided for any client. One pair (of four) candle stands also made for the Drawing Room at Brocket by Chippendale, formerly in the Gerstenfeld Collection, Washington DC, were acquired in 2018 by The Cleveland Museum of Art (2018.203).  Brocket Hall Sir Matthew Lamb, 1st Baronet, purchased the estate in 1746 and built the hall as it is seen today in around 1760 to the designs of the architect Sir James Paine. The interiors of the house are mostly on a modest country house scale with the exceptions of the main staircase and the Grand Saloon, for which the present chairs were commissioned. These rooms were decorated specifically for entertaining royalty. The walls are lined with silk, the original furniture was made by Chippendale, and the ceiling was painted by Francis Wheatley. The cost of this one room alone is recorded as £1,500 which equated to more than the cost of a substantial mansion at the time. The Hall took fifteen years to compete, by which time Sir Matthew had died and his son Peniston Lamb inherited Brocket Hall at the age of 21. Sir Peniston was raised to the peerage, as 1st Viscount Melbourne in 1781 allegedly on account of his wife's social and political capabilities as mistress of the Prince Regent, the future King George IV. Upon the death of 1st Lord Melbourne, his son William inherited and succeeded to the title, becoming the 2nd Viscount Melbourne. William was a political powerhouse of the time and held the position of Prime Minister twice throughout his lifetime. In 1837, it was Lord Melbourne who broke the news to a young Victoria that she was to become Queen. She often visited Brocket Hall owing to their close friendship and until her marriage to Prince Albert, weekly bunches of flowers were sent from the Estate to the Palace. On Melbourne's death, the house passed to his sister, Emily, whose second husband was another Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston. It was in turn inherited by Emily's grandson by her first marriage, Francis Cowper, 7th Earl Cowper, though it was his younger brother, Henry (d.1887), who lived at Brocket Hall. In 1893, Lord Mount Stephen, leased Brocket Hall from the 7th Earl for the remainder of his lifetime. Lord Stephen was President of the Bank of Montreal and the first Canadian to be elevated to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. For the next three years guests included the Queen's children: the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and the Princess Mary, Duchess of Teck. After the death of the 7th Earl Cowper (1905), the underlying future reversion was left to his niece, but she died only a year after him (1906) and the estate passed to her husband, Admiral Lord Walter Kerr, who lived at Melbourne Hall. When Lord Mount Stephen died in 1921, Kerr put the estate up for sale and in 1923 it was purchased by Sir Charles Nall-Cain who owned and ran the brewing company Walker Cain Ltd, later Allied Breweries. He was raised to the peerage in 1923 for his contribution to the national war effort and economy. Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.The chairs are regilded and have some rubbing and chips revealing some underlying wood/gesso/red bole.There is some evidence of old worm to some seat rails.The chairs are labelled A-F, chairs A, B and D have no screw holes to the rails.The woven silk upholstery shows few signs of use.Please see the additional condition report photographs through the link on the condition report email as a visual reference of condition. Condition Report Disclaimer
