After Greenwich and Dartmouth, Godfrey-Faussett was appointed an unofficial aide-de-camp to the then Prince George of Wales in 1890. His naval career continued, briefly, before he was later posted to the royal yacht HMS Osborne (1896-97), then HMS Caesar (1898-99), promoted to commander, and found himself in Prince George's entourage again (now Duke of York and Cornwall). On the prince's appointment as Prince of Wales, in 1901, G-F was promoted to Equerry-in-Ordinary, accompanied the heir to India (1905-06), and retired from active service in 1906 to permanently be in attendance. On the accession in 1910, G-F served the then George V as Equerry-in-Ordinary until the monarch's death, whence he was an Extra Equerry to the king's sons Edward VIII and George VI until G-F's own death in 1945.

Similar marine paintings to the present work are in public collections including Manchester Art Gallery, Colchester and Ipswich Museums and the Arts Council Collection. The artist was closely associated with the Bloomsbury Group, including Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, in the 1930s through his company Allan Walton Textiles.

The Milner Memorial altarpiece, which depicted scenes from the life of St. Martin of Tours, was the final major public commission that Knights completed before her untimely death in 1947. The work was highly praised, including by Bishop George Bell of Chichester, an important patron of arts, who had commissioned works by Vanessa Bell and Hans Feibusch.

Pediment slightly warped. The dial appears in good order with minimal wear. Tarnish and discolouration to brass. Some repair and alteration to the bracket. Winding key is possibly associated. Ticks and chimes when wound, and the strike/ silent function appears in working order, however we are unable to guarantee that this represents perfect working condition. Overall appears in fair order, with a few minor cosmetic issues. The clock is 41cm high without the bracket.
