Winston Churchill (1874-1965), manuscript notes for a speech given at the Connaught Rooms, 16 March 1949, in bold pencil on both sides of a menu card for the event. The dinner was hosted by the Association of Adopted Conservative & Unionist Candidates, and was held in honour of Churchill - presumably a rallying call in preparation for the General Election due the following year. Details of the speech can be found at the Churchill Archives Centre (CHUR 5/24A-E/674-682). The pencil notes refer to the 'danger' of communism, 'Socialism & Communism, what is the difference', and America's 'success of enterprise'; some notes almost indecipherable, but clear mentions of 'housing', 'subsidies', 'End of Man', 'Nothing to Give except what they take first', 'I should jolly well think so'. The Toast List shows the subject, 'The Conservative Party and its Leader', proposed by the Chairman, G. Spencer Summers, and the 'Reply' from Churchill - these notes presumably acting as prompts. Framed, glazed to recto and verso (both sides visible); appears clean and bright with very faint creasing; some spotting around central foldProvenance: Vendor purchased this from Margaret Fenton, nee Bell, daughter of Sir Stanley Bell, when she was invited to Euxton Hall prior to its sale

Augustin Merceron à Angoulême, an ebonised French portico mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the nine-rod cast pendulum having a bob depicting the mask of a mythical male, the decorative round cast brass dial having black Roman hour numerals, a cast decorative bezel, blued steel moon hands and signed Aug.tin Merceron à Angoulême, the flat-top ebonised case having tapered ebonised columns to the four corners with ormolu capitals, applied ormolu mounts to the front, a stepped base and standing on bun feet, height 44cm.* Biography Augustin Merceron is recorded as a clock and chronometer maker working in Place de Marché, Angoulême from before 1830 until at least 1840. At some point he worked with Breguet where 'Il fit des echappements et des terminages pour A.L. Breguet', with one clock sold at Christies Auctioneers in 2008 recorded as Aug.tin Merceron Elève de Breguet à Angoulême. One of Merceron's apprentices was the well-known and influential Parisian horloger Julien-Hilaire Rodanet who worked with him until 1837 prior to moving to Paris.

Samuel Marti, Paris, a French black marble mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the backplate stamped with the trademark of the blanc roulant maker Samuel Marti et Cie and numbered 292, with a twin-tube mercury compensating pendulum, the round dial having black stylised Arabic numerals with the centre inset housing the visible escapement and with decorative blued steel hands and cast decorative bezel, the black marble case with glazed front to allow viewing of the pendulum, scroll mounts to the sides and green variegated marble fluted columns to the front, height 42.5cm.* Biography Samuel Marti was one of the prolific French makers of the 1800's and was known to be working circa 1860 at Le Pays de Montbeliard, Paris making roulant blancs. Along with Japy Freres and Roux they set up a business in 1863 to market their movements to such firms as L'Epée. Their Paris address was Rue Vieille-du-Temple from 1870.

Oldmeadow, Lynn, with classical floral engraved decoration to the corners and arch and blued steel hands, with an engraved dial within the arch for strike/silent, the mahogany case having fluted quarter columns with brass stops and cast-brass capitals, with a shaped moulding to the door, the hood having fluted pillars with brass stops and cast-brass capitals and surmounted by a pagoda top with a wood sound fret to the front and three brass ball-and-spire finials, the base with a raised shaped panel, a double plinth and standing on bracket feet, height 234cm including finial. *Biography Thomas Oldmeadow is recorded as working in Lynn (Kings Lynn), Norfolk from circa 1784 until after 1798 holding three policies with the Royal Exchange Insurance. A number of longcase clocks are recorded, all with silvered dials as in this example. Mark Hawkins, Bury St Edmunds, a lacquer longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch brass break-arch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and Arabic five-minute markings to the outer aspect, the matted dial centre having a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and an applied plaque engraved with the maker's name Mark Hawkins, St Edmunds, Bury, with cast-brass vase spandrels to the four corners, the arch having a round boss engraved with a ho-ho bird with dolphin spandrels either side, the pagoda-topped black lacquered case having raised Oriental chinoiserie decoration to the arched trunk door, base and hood, with the hood having quarter pillars, height 212cm. * Biography Mark Hawkins is recorded as both a watch and clockmaker in Bury St. Edmunds working in the early-to-mid 18th century with his father, also Mark, working from before 1670 until at least 1710.

James Ritchie, Edinburgh, a mahogany longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell and having a thirteen-inch round silvered dial engraved with black Roman hour numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, date dial and signed James Ritchie, Edinburgh, with blued steel moon hands and a cast brass bezel, the mahogany drum-head case having a curved top to the trunk door, quartered columns with panel below, a panelled base and standing on bracket feet, height 205cm.* Biography James Ritchie was apprenticed to James Howden of Edinburgh in circa 1799. He married Sarah (Sally) Neil in December 1804 and began his business at 29, Leith Street in 1809 gaining a reputation for his honesty and sound work. He was admitted as a Burgess of the city on the 18th of April 1816. He had a son Frederick who was apprenticed to Ritchie and who became his partner in 1838 aged only 11 years old. Angelo & Cadenazzi, Winchester, a mahogany longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch break-arch painted dial having black Roman hour numerals and floral corner spandrels, the dial centre having subsidiary second, date dials and signed D. Angelo & Cadenazzi, Winchester, with floral decoration painted within the arch and blued steel spade hands, the mahogany case having ebonised crossbanding to the arched trunk door and base, the hood with inlaid stringing and fluted pillars with cast-brass capitals and surmounted with whales-tooth cresting, all standing on bracket feet, height 217cms.

Samuel Northcote, Plymouth a mahogany longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch silvered break-arch dial engraved with black Roman hour numerals and Arabic five-minute markings to the outer aspect, the dial centre engraved with subsidiary seconds and date dials along with the maker's name Saml. Northcote, Plymouth, the arch engraved with a Strike/Silent dial, the arch-topped mahogany case having boxwood crossbanding to the to the trunk and hood doors, with the quarter pillars to the trunk and hood having brass stops and capitals, the pediment surmounted by three brass ball-and-spire finials and with a raised panel to the base, height 212cm inc. finial.* Biography Samuel Northcote is recorded as working in Plymouth as a clockmaker and optician. He died in his eighty-third year on the 13th November 1791. His son, also Samuel, continued as a watch and clockmaker and died aged 71 in 1813. Samuel jnr's son James Northcote RA was apprenticed to Samuel but settled as an accomplished portrait painter becoming a Royal Academician.Reference Clive N. A small and slim mahogany grandmother longcase clock: the eight-day, weight-driven movement striking the hours on a bell and having a brass cylindrical pendulum bob, the 6½-inch brass break-arch dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and Arabic five-minute numerals to the outer aspect, the dial centre engraved with floral decoration, with cast-brass c-scroll spandrels to the corners, the arch with an applied boss signed with the makers name J. Hughs, London and further c-scroll spandrels, the arched mahogany case having a shaped moulding to the trunk door, barley-twist columns to the hood and all standing on bracket feet, height 176cm.
