Lot 160

A rare Chinese straw-glazed stoneware percussion bell, Warring States period, 42cm high The present pottery bell closely resembles its bronze counterparts. In the Eastern Zhou period, similar bells were produced in sets to imitate the more expensive bronze musical instruments. However, relatively few examples have survived to the present day.A set of five Eastern Zhou dynasty straw-glazed bells of comparable size (h. 35-38 cm), formerly in the collection of T.T. Tsui and now in the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, are illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art. Chinese Ceramics I: Neolithic to Liao, Hong Kong, 1993, pl. 9. Two similar glazed bells (h. 35.6 and 17.1 cm) are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession no. 1988.20.8Oxford Authentication TL report: P121p66, 14 February 2022戰國 青釉陶甬鐘(附牛津熱釋光報告)牛津熱釋光報告編號:P121p66, 頒發日期:2022年2月14日 Condition Report: some chips but no signs of major damageCondition Report Disclaimer

Lot 345

PITTYVAICH 12 YEAR OLD FLORA & FAUNA SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT 43% ABV / 70clPittyvaich was built in 1975 by Arthur Bell & Sons in Dufftown, just a stones throw from The Dufftown Distillery. Most of its output was used in the Bell's blend, but it was also bottled as a single malt for the Flora & Fauna range and more recently in the form of the occasional Diageo Special Release. The distillery was sadly deemed to be surplus to requirements in 1993 and was demolished in 2002, making the liquid even more sought after.

Lot 82

BLAIR ATHOL 11 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS LAING'S PREMIER BARREL HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT One of only 821 bottles released 46% ABV / 70cl Despite being situated in the small town of Pitlochry, Blair Athol distillery is named after another town about seven miles further north. There is some speculation that this was done to ingratiate the distillery with the Duke of Athol who owned the land the distillery was built on. As with so many other distilleries, Blair Athol couldn’t weather the storm of The Great Depression and closed its doors in 1930. During this period of silence the distillery was acquired by Arthur Bell & Sons who reopened it in 1949. Today it still provides the heart of the Bell’s blend.

The flotilla under the command of Lieutenant-Commander F. C. Russel-Roberts, R.N.V.R., and was based at Dartmouth between October 1943 and November 1944. A second formation of the 52nd that included M.T.B. 764 was later raised under the command of Lieutenant Commander A. R. H. Nye. This new flotilla was based at Yarmouth, later at Ostend, and operated from November 1944 to September 1945. Completing twelve months’ service, Bell was promoted to Acting Sub Lieutenant R.N.V.R. on 12 December 1944, and also became the 1st Lieutenant of M.T.B. 764. On leaving this boat he was appointed commanding officer of M.T.B. 2013 on 24 April 1945, and received the promotion to Sub Lieutenant R.N.V.R. on 12 June 1945. Due to the Korean War, he was never released and was immediately recalled to active service and continued to serve aboard Perseus for a further two years. In 1953 he withdrew his request for retirement and elected to remain with the Royal Navy, and his next appointment extended his service in aircraft carriers. On 7 December 1953 he joined H.M.S. Theseus, Flag Ship of Rear Admiral S. H. Carlill, C.B., D.S.O., Flag Officer Training Squadron, Home Fleet, and whilst serving in this ship he was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander on 12 June 1955.
