A LARGE AND MASSIVE BRONZE VAJRA, 17TH-18TH CENTURY 十七至十八世紀大型銅金鋼杵Tibet. Heavily cast, the central rod made of iron, the four-pronged vajra decorated in relief with worshippers to the lower end of each prong flanked by incised borders, the central sphere framed by a beaded border and a foliate band. Provenance: From an old South German private collection, by repute acquired from Schoettle Ostasiatika between 1968 and 1989, and thence by descent to the last owner. Condition: Very good condition with old wear and some casting imperfections. The iron with encrustations. Few minuscule nicks and light scratches here and there. Fine, naturally grown, dark patina. Weight: 987.1 g Dimensions: Length 24.2 cm The vajra, a symbol of indestructibility and power, is one of the primary ritual symbols in Tibetan Buddhism. Derived from Sanskrit and translating to both thunderbolt and diamond, the vajra consists of two sets of prongs from which lotus petals emanate, flanking a central sphere. The mouthpiece of brass, decorated with two pierced, globular elements between two discs, the lower disc with a lobed rim, the wood handle carved with outward scalloping between the finger holes, and a brass bell. The interior of the brass bell with an illegible mark.Provenance: From the collection of Tony Bingham, United Kingdom. Tony Bingham is a retired dealer of antique musical instruments. He and his wife Irene opened several stores in London beginning in the 1960s, where they were selling antique instruments to museums, private collectors, and musicians, for more than 40 years. He also published several books on the history of musical instruments, including The New Langwill Index, a Dictionary of Musical Wind-Instrument Makers and Inventors. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, traces of usage and minuscule nicks, the brass bell loose. At Arthur Tooth & Sons in Mayfair, he started his five-decade career in bringing new European and American art to London just after the war. Later he pursued his increasing personal interests as a collector. Serving as a respected consultant for Christie's London, he always refused a salary, declaring "they can't fire me because they don't pay me". A 19th century French gilt-metal-mounted and porcelain eight-day mantle clock: the domed top decorated with a recumbent female in country surroundings and below a two-handled classical-style urn finial; the 'jewelled' porcelain dial with Roman numerals and signed 'Raingo Fres - Paris' and with further hand-decorated scene of a shepherd and shepherdess below; two fluted classical-style columns flanking and the porcelain sides further 'jewelled' and decorated with an arrow quiver, a shield, rivens and similar allegorical ornament; the glazed circular door opening to reveal gilded interior signed 'Japy Frere'; the movement striking on a bell and with original pendulum numbered 1453 and corresponding to the numbered movement and also the back of the front porcelain panel (also numbered and annotated), on four squat circular tapering feet (38cm highest x 18.75cm widest)Condition Report: The clock is a little dirty, the gilt has 'dulled down' to good finish. Some of the gilt panels have moved or dropped and are no longer in the centre (could be rectified easily). The porcelain appears to be in good general condition with no major problems. The painting is good and it is noted that the movement - the lower back end of the case on the outside (and the pendulum also) are marked 1453.
