Lintot, 1712.⁂ Famous account of privateering in the South Seas. Rogers set out from Bristol with William Dampier as his pilot and travelled along the coasts of Chile and Peru seeking out Spanish prizes. He landed on the Juan Fernandez islands in order to shelter from a storm, and there rescued the marooned Alexander Selkirk, the inspiration for Defoe's Robinson Crusoe.

A good mid 19th century French engraved brass repeating carriage clockPaul Garnier, Paris, No. 3130The one-piece case with engraved turned handle on folding supports over a large bevelled glass inspection panel and repeat button, the frame and solid shuttered rear door engraved all over with foliate scrolls and panels of lattice work, on a matching base, the signed rectangular white enamel Roman dial with blue numerals and typical fleur de lys hands, over an Arabic alarm-setting dial, the numbered bell-striking movement with silvered lever platform escapement and bimetallic balance, the hand setting is effected through an aperture in the bell and this arbor now has a push-fit knurled knob in place for ease of use. A good and rare early 19th century gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock in the form of a beehiveCaspar Hollermann, WurzburgRealistically modelled on a thatched hive complete with ten bees attempting to gain access, on an octagonal base raised on turned feet, the 3.5 inch signed white enamel dial with minute track and Arabic quarters enclosing Roman numerals and a pair of pierced gilt hands, the twin spring driven movement with circular plates with flattened base united by pillars pinned through the backplate, with silk suspended pendulum and outside countwheel strike on a bell. Running and striking. Together with a later, custom-made velvet-covered circular base on a turned plinth under a (repaired) glass dome. The clock 33cms (13ins) high. Total height including base and glass dome 43cms (17ins) high.Footnotes:The bee has been revered for many reasons from ancient times - certainly not only for the sweet honey that it produces - it is industrious and works tirelessly for the good of the hive. Napoleon chose the bee as his imperial emblem and it was embroidered in gold on his coronation robe of 1805. The current clock was made at around this time. Provenance: Single family ownership for 130 years. Edmund John Pace (1840-1911) was the grandson of John Pace of Bury St Edmunds, the famous clockmaker (see lots 68-73 in this auction), but he did not follow a horological career. Instead, he led a life in business as a Director of Bryant and May match manufacturers, a booming business in the 19th century. This clock was a gift from his fellow Directors in 1890 for his services to the Company. A rare second half of the 18th century French ormolu musical mantel clockNoel Baltazar a ParisThe elaborate case surmounted by a classical urn festooned in laurel swags over an oak wreath framing the dial, set on an architectural base with festooned Ionic pilasters, foliate finials and a rocky base, the open lattice-framed side panels allowing the sound out through silk backing, on a shaped base and conforming ebonised wood plinth on lions paw feet, centred by the seated figure of a cherub playing the harp, the signed 3.5 inch white enamel dial with outer Arabic five minutes enclosing a minute band and Roman hours, with fancy pierced and engraved hands, the circular clock movement with extended plates to accommodate the twin barrels united by five turned tapering knopped pillars, signed in full, with anchor escapement and silk suspension, the outside countwheel with hand engraved numerals and striking on a bell, the separate chain fusee musical movement set below and activated via a push rod. The musical movement with shaped rectangular plates united by turned pillars and playing a run of twelve bells and nineteen hammers set horizontally in the base. Ticking, striking and playing a tune. Sold with a crank winder and case key. 77cms (30ins) high (3)Footnotes:A commemorative plaque on the back door reads:'This clock was purchased with money received by George Dalziel for literary contributions to Fun and other periodical publications 1880.''Fun' was a weekly magazine founded by H.J.Byron, an actor and playwright, first published on 21 September 1861. It ran for 50 years, before being absorbed into 'Sketchy Bits in 1901. It was aimed at a well-educated readership and covered literature, politics, sports, and the theatre in direct competition to the perhaps better known, but at times more staid, 'Punch'. Byron handed over the reins to a Mr Tom Hood in 1865, who in turn sold it to George (1815-1902) and Edward Dalziel (1817–1905) in 1870. The Dalziel brothers were publishers and highly regarded engravers in their own right who had established a family business in 1839. They cut the illustrations for Edward Lear's 'Book of Nonsense' in 1862 and those for 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass' by Lewis Carroll. They worked with many internationally renowned names in the art world including Myles Birket Foster, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and James McNeill Whistler. Examples can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum. An autobiographical study of their work 'The Brothers Dalziel, A Record of Work, 1840-1890' was published by Methuen. A mid 17th century lantern clockThe strapped bell surmounted by a later gilt brass knop, on cup-and-cover finials, tapering Doric columns and ball feet, with right hand door and iron backplate (the latter displaying the holes for the alarm train), the dial with Roman chapter ring engraved with an inner quarter hour track and tall wheatear half-hour marks, the centre with original alarm setting disc framed by a ring of flowers emanating from VI, with an old steel hand, the weight driven movement originally with balance control, but now converted to verge and pendulum. Note, this clock has remained untouched for many generations, and shows the commensurate rust and grime. A late 17th century ebony brass-mounted basket-top table clock with pull quarter repeatRichard Fennell, KensingtonThe silk-backed repousse basket with adorned dolphin handles on foliate bud pommels, flanked by urn finials, over an elaborately moulded cornice, glazed rectangular side panels and a moulded base on later block feet, the 7 inch square gilt brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels framing the Roman and Arabic chapter ring with half-quarter marks and fleur de lyse half hour markers framing a finely matted centre with shaped chamfered mock pendulum aperture, ringed winding squares and a decorated date aperture, the twin gut fusee movement with six finely knopped and finned pillars, with knife-edge verge escapement, the strike and quarter repeat system using two internally mounted racks to sound the hours and quarters on demand on one large and one small bell, each hammer with a fettled steel spring, the backplate signed in a circular wheat ear cartouche within a symmetrical pattern of foliate scrolls united by strapwork within a wheatear border. He trained under two masters and finally gained his Freedom after ten years, in 1679. He made and sold all manner of clocks - lantern, longcase and table - from his premises in Kensington, one of the best known being the miniature brass-covered table timepiece of circa 1700 exhibited in the 'Horological Masterworks' Exhibition, (The Museum of the History of Science, Oxford, 29 March - 22 June 2003, item number 48). A good early 18th century numbered 8-day burr walnut longcase clockGeorge Graham, London No.588, c.1717The flat-topped hood with blind fret carved frieze set on three-quarter and quarter columns mounted with brass Doric capitals and bases, the long door punch numbered twice to the front edge, veneered with lively figuring and framed by an elaborate moulded edge, over a feather-banded rectangular base, the sides further inlaid with feather banded panels. The 11 inch square brass dial with double screwed Indian mask spandrels interspersed by foliate engraving, the right hand edge set with the maintaining power lever, the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with floating lozenge half hour markers, finely matted centre with subsidiary seconds dial, chamfered date aperture (with pin adjustment) and an applied nameplate, 'Geo: Graham, London', with original blued steel hands (the hour hand on a hexagonal boss) secured by four latched dial feet to the substantial weight driven, eight-day movement, the plates united by five heavy knopped pillars riveted to the back and latched to the frontplate, the going train with bolt and shutter maintaining power and anchor escapement with a long steel crutch to a pendulum with circular-section steel rod terminating in a brass bob with engraved rating nut. A very fine late 19th century Exhibition-quality, quarter chiming skeleton clock with special escapement, remote winding and remote hand setting, with the original glass dome and walnut baseCamerer Kuss & Co, 56 New Oxford St, LondonThe elaborate Gothic-inspired frame united by twelve turned pillars and cast with spires, quatrefoils, and other architectural motifs, signed in a signature plaque mounted top centre within a Gothic-style architectural niche, on a substantial plinth base with engraved border, set to the front with a pair of cast gilt bronze figures of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria on circular bases with foliate and crown decoration, the frame further set with applied plaques 'WESTMINSTER & TEN BELLS CHIMES' the 6.75 inch gilt dial with painted Gothic Roman numerals interspersed by engraved foliage and roundels, framed to the outer edge by a pierced running border of foliate scrolls, the internal edge with arcaded trefoils, echoing the tips of the blued steel pierced hands, the unique movement with three chain fusees, (the quarter train with engine turned spring barrel cap), all three winding squares set in the base behind shutters revealed on pushing a horizontal slide, each train with heavy chains running over pulleys to the fusee arbors, the quarters announced via a choice of Westminster chimes on gongs hidden in the base, or on a run on ten bells set in two sets of five mounted front to back behind the standing Royal couple, each bell struck by a stylised brass halberd, the going train with a deadbeat 'scape wheel mounted on a three-armed bridge set on three pillars screwed into the back of the frame, the sliding detent-type escapement with two-part pendulum terminating in a cylindrical bob and suspended from an adjustable block mounted on a shaped bracket spanning the plates above, the hours struck on a heavy gong mounted in the base. The walnut base with carved arcaded decoration and sliding covers for the winding squares. The right hand side is set with two gilt engraved buttons, 'SET HANDS' and 'WESTMINSTER CHIMES/10 BELLS CHIMES'. The hands are set by pushing down on the relevant button to engage a series of rods and bevelled gears to advance the hands. Together with the original glass dome. Running, striking and chiming. To the top of the frame 80cms (31.5ins) high. With glass dome in place, 82cms (32.5ins)Footnotes:This clock was made to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and is illustrated in Camerer Cuss & Co: The Bicentenary 1788-1988, Antique Collector's Club, 1988, p.26. The firm used an image of it on an 1897 calendar, and undoubtedly it would have taken pride of place in the shop window. The remote winding and hand-setting is a revelation - one of the main issues for all skeleton clock owners is that 52 times a year, the glass dome has to be removed safely and then put back safely, this is why so many 19th century skeleton clocks are now lacking their domes. The current clock retains its original, perfectly fitting dome. Prince Albert had died 36 years before this clock was made, but still featured strongly during Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The figures on the clock depict the young married couple, Albert is decorated with the Order of the Garter and the Golden Fleece. Victoria is dressed out of period, in a simple Medieval-style gown, the pair perhaps portraying the Age of Chivalry, in tune with the gothic decoration of the clock. A rare late 18th century English mahogany quarter- and Dutch-striking' table clockThomas Pace Senior, LondonThe bell topped case with five flambe finials over substantial side handles and boldly cast gilt-brass sound frets centred by a cherubs head within a sunburst, on a plinth base and (later) brass ogee feet, the 7.75 inch brass dial with a pair of painted subsidiary dials for date and strike/silent flanking the recessed signature plate over a Roman and Arabic dial with matching hands, the substantial three chain fusee movement now with Brocot style deadbeat escapement striking the hours on the hour and the half-hour, in the Dutch tradition, further chiming the quarters on a rack of eight bells and hammers, the backplate with double-line border framing an allover design of foliate scrolls centred by a basket of fruit. Ticking, chiming and striking, with pendulum, case key and winding key. 58cms (22.5ins) highFootnotes:Clock lovers the world over know the iconic skeleton clocks of John Pace of Bury St Edmunds. Working 170 years ago, his use of clean lines and strong geometric forms give the appearance of an object from the mid-20th century, or even the modern day. His vertical wheel trains can be seen as a precursor of those used to such effect by Jaeger le Coultre in the 1950s and 60s. But John was only one of ten clockmakers from the Pace family, a dynasty that spanned 150 years from the 1740s into the 1890s.
