Catalogue Note See Britten's 'Old Clocks & Watches and their Makers': Samuel Watson, Coventry and London, horologist, is listed as active between 1649-1710, 'inventor curious piece of clockwork; a clock sold to Charles II, shows the rising and setting of the sun and many other motions.' He is credited with inventing the five-minute repeater.

Catalogue Note The Pinchbeck Family started as clockmakers under Christopher Pinchbeck (1670-1732). The family took their name from a small village in Lincolnshire. He was famous for his complicated astronomical-musical clocks and automata. He also invented a metal with the appearance of gold, known today as 'Pinchbeck metal'. His elder son, also called Christopher (d.1783), continued on his own and supplied George III with an astronomical clock, which is still in the Royal Collection.

It was used by Elton John on stage during his 1974 American tour as a part of his 'Bicycle John' costume. Today, the corresponding platform boots and costume, which is decorated with a bicycle bell, mudguards, reflectors and handlebar covers are in the collection of The Victoria and Albert Museum (accession no. S.231 to S.233&A-1977), having been donated by Sir Elton John himself. The bicycle was customised with diamantes for Sir Elton John by Bill Whitten (1944-2006), American costume designer to the stars. Interestingly, the platform boots preserved at the V&A are also encrusted with rhinestones to the soles and heels. A well engineered 3 1/2 inch gauge model of 'Buffalo' a 2-8-0 Canadian Switcher tender locomotive No 8342, built to the design by Martin Evans and rebuilt by the late Mr Peter Dupen. The silver soldered copper boiler with fittings including water sight glass, steam pressure gauge, safety valve, regulator, lever operated fire doors and wheel direction control to cab. The chassis having Baker valve gear and piston valves, ratchet oiler system, fluted motion and water injector. Double bogie tender with rear mounted ladder. The model finished in black lined livery with fitted steps, handrails, lamp irons, mounted bell and spot light to smoke box door. A Napoleon III ormolu and porcelain mounted eight-day mantel clock, retailed by Charles Frodsham, Paris, the case with female figure surmount amongst foliage and two porcelain panels beneath and beside the white enamel dial, fitted a twin-barrel movement, striking on a bell and on a serpentine giltwood base, complete with glass dome on an ebonised base, 59cm high CONDITION REPORT: There is no number to the dial, 6545 on the movement. Gilding rubbed in places especially to arm of figure, back also rubbed, panels good. Clock and serpentine stand maybe a marriage with dome and base. Not at present in working order and dome slightly chipped at base.

Splits and losses to plinth, cracking to veneer. Central finial loose and damaged but present. Top board of hood warped and lifting. Pendulum slightly bent.Dial 300mm wide, 420mm high. Additional photos added. The movement does not sit securely within the case with the hood door open.

A George III lacquered longcase clock, with an arched brass dial, with a silvered chapter ring with subsidiary seconds and calendar aperture, inscribed William Ray, Sudbury, with a eight-day movement and striking the hours on a bell, with a ball mounted hood, chinoiserie decorated trunk and door, with weights and pendulum, dial 11.5in., 243cm highCondition report: Case worn, and ball finials damaged. Dial and movement appears to have been cleaned.It appears to have originally been black, rather than a deep red or green. The case is structurally in a good order. There are losses/flaking sections to the lacquer. The seat board and case do not show obvious signs of adjustment, such as additional timbers, which suggests they may be original.
