Lot 620

Oglaigh na hEireann (Irish Republican Army). Special Communique issued by the Army Council, dated 10 September 1941. Tall narrow folio, 4 pp (single folded sheet), one corner frayed without loss. A remarkable document, stating that Stephen Hayes, Chief of Staff of the Irish Republican Army, has been arrested [by the IRA itself], charged with treachery and conspiracy to betray the Republic, imprisoned and sentenced to death, and that he has 'expressed a desire to make a complete confession'. The remainder of the document is taken up with his alleged confession, which states that he had discussions with Dr. James Ryan, Minister for Agriculture, [Garda] Chief Superintendent Martin Lynch and others about IRA plans and activities. It claims that Dr. Ryan incited the IRA to carry out the arms raid on the Magazine Fort, so that the Government could move against certain Irish Army officers whom it wished to remove, that he encouraged the IRA to raid banks for funds, and much else. * Hayes escaped from IRA custody and issued his own account of these events (published in full in 'The Bell'), alleging that his 'confession' was secured by torture. The truth of the whole affair was never fully cleared up, but it seems likely that there was some contact between Hayes and Dr. Ryan and others, in the general context of divisions within the IRA about Sean Russell's bombing campaign in England. This IRA statement was suppressed and is rare. (1)

Halford, 43 Fenchurch Street, London, with chime/silent, regulation and chime on 4 bells/chime on 8 bells to the arch, the triple fusee movement with signed back plate ‘Robert H Halford, 43 Fenchurch Street, London’, striking to 8 bells and a gong, 74cm high by 46cm wide by 27cm deep. CONDITION REPORT: There are two breaks to the Gothic hanging columns found on each corner of the upper case. One of these losses is to the front-right group of columns, the other is to the back-left. Each of the broken pieces is present and could be restored. The front door is in good order with a working key. The dial is quite clean, all the steel hands are in good order and look to be modern replacements. All dial engraving, numerals, signature etc are in good order. There is a visible repair to part of the stepped carving on the upper-left of the clock case at the front. The spire at the back of the centre of the case has a chipped base. The metal and fabric cover of the back door is bent inwards slightly but is otherwise stable. The movement appears clean. Mechanically the clock seems to be in very good order. It winds very smoothly and strikes without issues on the hour and each quarter. The chime/silent, speed regulation and the chime on 8 bells/chime on 4 bells adjustments all seem to be working correctly. The clock strikes with a good tone on the gong and all hammers are striking the bell correctly.

Lot 3

A good French Louis Philippe I ormolu eight-day mantel clock, circa 1835, signed Guyerdet, the 7cm silvered dial with Roman numerals, split moon hands, the keyhole-shaped case decorated allover with stylised acanthus leaves, the upper case sides with glass panels for viewing the movement, the movement striking on a bell on the hour and half hour, signed Guyerdet Ainé Paris and numbered 4105, with key, height 26 cm including the knotted handle. * For a nearly identical example of this clock case, see Gardiner Houlgate, Fine Clocks, 24th October 2019, lot 1324. This previous example was fitted with a movement by the renowned French horologist Paul Garnier, and featured his patented 'Pendule Portative' escapement, which required no pendulum. The case of this other clock featured a glass aperture directly underneath the handle, which allowed the escapement to be viewed from above. Our example holds a more typical twin-barrel, pendulum-driven movement, but the case is nonetheless of the same fine quality. CONDITION REPORT: Winds and runs, although the movement requires cleaning and calibrating.

Tibats', with chamfered square supports,91cm wide45cm deep74cm highMany fine pieces of 18th-century furniture, particularly card tables, bear the stamp ‘H. TIBATS’ on their hinges. The stamp almost certainly refers to Hugh Tibbatts, ‘hinge and sash fastening maker‘ of Bell Street, Wolverhampton, listed relatively late in the 1781 Pearson & Rollason Directory for Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Bilston and Willenhall. A concertina-action card table, c.1755-60, with quadrant hinges stamped ‘H. Tibats’ is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum (W.65:1-1962).Literature: P Thornton, 'A Signed Hinge', Journal of the Furniture History Society, Leeds, 1966, pp.44-45, pl.XXIII.
