Lot 254

Attributed to Edward Hayes RHA (Irish, 1797-1864), LAURA BELL, watercolour, framed and mounted, 34 x 28 cm, dated verso 'Dublin, 1849', light foxing to paper, repairs and chips to frame. From Wikipedia: Laura Eliza Jane Seymour Bell (1829-1894, married name Thistlethwayte) was an Irish-born courtesan of Victorian England. She was most notorious for the Nepalese Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana reputedly spending £250,000 on her. She later experienced a religious conversion and became a revivalist preacher on morality. Bell was born in Glenavy, Co. Antrim, later moved to Dublin where she became a successful courtesan. Bell is rumoured to have had an affair with Dr William Wilde, father of Oscar Wilde. In 1849 Bell moved to London, where she became known as The Queen of London Whoredom. Rich noblemen and dukes were entertained by Bell. She often drove in Hyde Park in a gilt carriage drawn by two white horses. It was here she met the Nepalese Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana. Rana installed Bell in a luxury house in Wilton Crescent, Belgravia, and showered her with gifts. There are stories that Rana paid £250,000 for one night with Bell, but it's far more likely that the sum was the total value of gifts given to Bell over the 90 days they spent together. This sum was underwritten by Lord Canning, Governor-General of India. When Rana had to return to Nepal, he gave Bell a diamond ring and a promise to fulfil her every wish as a parting gift. During the Indian Mutiny Bell wrote to Rana asking him to send troops to assist in the British during the Sepoy Mutiny. She enclosed the ring to remind him of his promise. Rana sent his troops. On 21 January 1852, she married Captain August Frederick Thistlethwayte, who lived in Grosvenor Square, London, and had an estate in Ross-shire, Scotland. Bell later found religion and became an Evangelist, and referred to herself as "God's Ambassadress". She hosted Evangelical tea parties for high society and aided London's prostitutes. In 1887, Thistlethwayte accidentally shot and killed himself (he habitually shot his revolver into the ceiling to summon his valet). Bell never remarried. Prime Minister William Gladstone and his wife became friends with Bell, and this friendship continued until Bell's death in 1894.

E. Lawrence in the Middle East. Maxwell Henry Coote (Wing Commander, 1895-1920) joined the Royal Field Artillery and saw service at Gallipoli in 1915, later transferring to the Royal Flying Corps. After the war he served as Churchill's aide de camp at the Cairo Peace Conference in 1921. The diary records his experiences with Churchill and his meetings with Lawrence throughout the Conference, documenting his time guiding the members of the party around the area. It includes novel insights as "Col. Lawrence has also joined our party tonight...he is most awfully nice to talk to, so quiet and unassuming and no 'side' whatsoever"; "I had breakfast about 9 o'clock. It is one great thing about Winston that he never gets up early"; "[Winston] took me out with him when he went off painting: we went to the most wonderful old Derwish monastery...I don't ever remember having seen anyone painting in oils before...he was quite amusing to watch and very typical in the way he slapped on paint and scraped it all off again, but he is very clever and has a great eye for colour...". The Conference was a series of meetings by British officials for examining and discussing Middle Eastern problems and to frame a common policy, which conclusively approved a plan for giving control over two large pieces of the former Turkish territories that Britain controlled to princes in the Hashemite family. The collection provides a fascinating insight into the workings and practicalities through this pivotal diplomatic event of Churchill, Lawrence and Bell, three of the most influential of the 39 delegates gathered in Cairo for the conference.
