§ Quentin Bell, (British, 1910-1996), Mermaids, a relief decorated plaque, probably Fulham Pottery, decorated with a brace of entwined mermaids and mounted to a hardwood plaque, unsigned 24 x 32.50cm (9 x 13in) Provenance: From the collection of Elisabeth Luard, Brynmeheryn. Quentin Bell was the son of Clive and Vanessa Bell and nephew of Virginia Woolf. He moved to Charleston in Lewes, East Sussex when he was 6 years old. There he grew up within the heart of the "Bloomsbury Group". Bell initially trained in fine art but moved to Stoke on Trent at the age of 25 to study pottery. He continued to work with clay for the rest of his life, alongside his writing and painting. He created the pottery at Charleston during World War II. His work is widely exhibited, including at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
