Robert Higgs, London - A mid 18th century quarter repeating pair cased pocket watch, circa 1740, the outer case, 50mm diameter, with pierced and engraved bezel, verso decorated with a repoussé classical scene within a scroll edged border depicting a woman holding an anchor (symbol of hope) being crowned with a laurel wreath by Father Time above a child holding a lamb (symbol of innocence), pulse piece sprung stud between 6 and 7 o'clock, the cover activated by a decorated push button at 3 o'clock, open faced pocket watch with unsigned white dial, 34mm diameter, blued beetle and poker hands, black Roman numerals and chemin de fer chapter ring with outer Arabic minute indicators under a convex crystal, front loading gilt full plate movement signed ROBT. HIGGS LONDON 2435, with plunger activated repeating mechanism, pierced and engraved winged balance cock with mascaron at the neck and substantial diamond endstone over a three arm balance, verge escapement with chain fusée, silvered regulation and 4 pinned cylindrical pillars, two polished steel hammers with square acting faces repeating on a bell to the inside case back, all under a brass signed and numbered dust cover, pulse piece to the band between 6 and 7 o'clock, case, 42mm diameter, stirrup shaped pendant bow, the sides with pierced sound frets and engraved with scrolls, wildlife and foliage, a townscape and 2435 beneath the pendant and a grotesque at 6 o'clock, verso with pierced rim, engraved starburst decoration to the centre and offset winding aperture, inner with bell secured by a single screw, casemaker's mark of Stephen Goujon struck twice under the bell, unmarked metal tests as 22ct gold (apart from the dust cover), 138.1g gross and presented with the winding keyRobert Higgs was seemingly a well-regarded London watch and clockmaker. He is recorded in three entries in the Clockmakers' Company List of Masters and Apprentices, (transcribed from Atkins' list of 1931 by Jeremy Lancelotte Evans). He was bound on 4th September 1699 to Richard Blundell, free on 19th September 1714 and subsequently took on a total of 6 apprentices between 1716 and 1731, the last of which was his son, Peter. Robert Higgs registered his mark of RH within a rectangular cartouche with the London Assay Office on 25th October 1721.Subsequent research kindly carried out by Richard Edgcumbe of the Victoria & Albert museum (Curator of Metalwork and author of 'The Art of the Gold Chaser in Eighteenth Century London' - the definitive reference work on the subject) suggests that there is strong evidence that the outer case was made by David Dupont. This goldsmith was working in London from the 1730s until his death in the late 1760s and is known to have signed an outer case on a watch which also has an inner case by Stephen Goujon. Edgcumbe's book includes an illustration of a signed example of Dupont's work with the same theme of Time crowning Hope, and he believes it reasonable to think that the two cases were chased by the same hand.Casemaker Goujon (the name suggests a possible Huguenot connection) was registered on 8th April 1720 at Porter Street, Corner of Newport Alley.

Baron, Sickert, Paintings and Drawings, Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2006, no. 188.1, p. 278The present lot was executed by Sickert as a preparatory sketch for the oil painting One of Madame Villain's Sons, a portrait which was painted in 1904 and formerly owned by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, now forming part of the Charleston House Trust collection. The drawing is one of a number of works depicting Maurice Villain, who lived in Neuville-lès-Dieppe with his mother, the fisherwoman, Madame Augustine Villain. Sickert lived with Augustine at the Maison Villain between 1899 and 1902, and the close relationship between the pair prompted speculation that Maurice Villain was in fact the Artist's illegitimate son. During this period, Sickert enjoyed the rural, rustic way of living in Neuville, as opposed to the more cosmopolitan Dieppe, and began to depict the area's local fishing community, the Polletais. After leaving Maison Villain in 1902, Sickert would spend three more years in France, before returning to London in 1905.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 100

A FRENCH EMPIRE ORMOLU FIGURAL MANTEL CLOCK, 'THE CHARIOT OF TELEMACHUS', PARIS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY, the case after the model by the bronzier Jean-André Reiche (1752-1817) of circa 1807, cast as a pair of horses drawing a lion-fronted chariot driven by Telemachus protected by Athena standing behind, the chariot wheel forming the dial with enamel chapter ring signed 'Ls BERGMILLER A PARIS', the pierced spokes revealing the front works signed 'Pons', the rectangular base applied with the eagle of Zeus (Jupiter) flanked by laurel wreaths and glaives, on four fasces supports, the detachable rear chariot wheel covering an eight-day movement with silk suspension (pendulum detached) and striking on a bell, outside count wheel detached, with key, 52cm longThis model is sometimes described as the Chariot of Diomedes, protected by Minerva. There exists a sketch by Reiche of the subject however, entitled 'Le Char de Télémaque', deposited in the Bibliothèque Impériale in 1807 (now the Bibliothèque Nationale, Ref.134-1807). The same model of clock is illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg, 'La Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe Siècle', 1997, p.417, plate D and by Tardy, 'Les Plus Belles Pendules Françaises', 1994, p.279. In Elke Niehüser, "Die Französische Bronzeuhr", 1997, p.69, it is suggested Reiche's design may have based on a model by the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Boyer (1783-1839). Similar clocks may be found in the collections of the Musée François Duesberg, Mons, Belgium, the Musée de Château de Malmaison, Rueil-Malmaison, France and in the Spanish Royal Collections.According to Tardy's 'Dictionnaire des horlogers français', Bergmiller [presumably first name Louis] was active in Paris from 1810-1830 on the Rue du Petit-Lion Saint Sauveur. The movement maker Pierre-Honoré-César Pons (1773-1851), having been associated with the prestigious firm of Lepaute, at the age of thirty set up shop as a clockmaker on rue de la Huchette in Paris. A few years later in 1807, he was assigned by the State to revive the clockmaking industry of Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, near Dieppe, in which he was highly successful, instigating production line methods for manufacturing blancs roulants leading to France's lead in clock making. His finely crafted movements and precision timepieces were exhibited at the Paris exhibitions, receiving a Silver Medal in 1819 and 1823, and a Gold Medal in 1827, 1834, 1839 and 1844.
