C. Bell 1879’, within a dark blue enamel surround, applied with aluminium entwined branches, with a red enamel crown at the top, an enamel English rose and Scottish thistle to the left and right, and a pale blue plaque at the base engraved VR, the reverse of the clasp engraved ‘To Lady Southampton from her affectionate VR February 1879’, on a tapered gold hinged bangle, the centre applied with entwined aluminium stems and polished aluminium borders, 6.1 widest inner diameter. Lady Ismay Catherine Southampton (née Nugent) (died 1918), was the second wife of 3rd Baron Southampton and Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria. Provenance: By family descent. See Gere, C., and Rudoe, J., “Jewellery In The Age Of Queen Victoria”, British Museum, London 2010, p204 for an aluminium and gold bangle modeled by Honore Bourdoncle, given to Queen Victoria in 1857.

58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot ‘Bell-Topped’ Officer’s shako plate circa 1829-44. A fine and rare gilt example of crowned star pattern mounted with cut silver eight pointed star mounted with a laurel wreath entwined with circular multi part scroll bearing the Regiment’s honours with two further honours in circlet with seeded ‘LVIII’ to centre set on a black cloth ground. Two horizontal loops to reverse. Generally VGC. During the period this plate was worn, the 58th Foot served firstly in Ceylon from 1828-38, the last two years under the command of Lieut.Colonel John Wharton Frith.; then, under the command of Lieut.Colonel Robert Henry Wynyard, it served in New South Wales 1843-45. It became 2nd Bn. Northamptonshire Regt. on Friday 1st July 1881.

Infantry Officer’s bell top shako circa 1829-35. A good and rare example. Black beaver body with patent leather crown and peak, two patent leather bands either side in the form of a V. Fitted with replacement circular gilt ear bosses mounted with the Royal Crest support a set of replacement leather backed chin scales. To the crown original wool ball tuft of white over scarlet. Original soft leather sweatband to the interior and with crimson silk panel to the crown. Some age and storage wear, loss of pile to beaver, split to front with repair (would be hidden by plate), also splits to rear panel. The shako retains a good shape and is in firm condition, and would make a suitable exhibition item.
