He studied at the former Dundee Art College in Bell Street before being called up to the army towards the end of the Second World War for service in India and Ceylon. On returning to Dundee he began work in the art department of DC Thomson where he illustrated for The Rover and The Victor, amongst others. After leaving D C Thomson’s went on to illustrate over 100 books but also continued to maintain a connection with the company, featuring in more than one thousand issues of The People’s Friend as the pen and brush of J Campbell Kerr. He also documented old Dundee with his lively pen and ink drawings and book collaborations with the late journalist, broadcaster and Courier columnist Ron Thompson. Latterly he followed in the footsteps of two artists he greatly admired, Joan Eardley and his good friend Lil Neilson, producing vibrant, expressive paintings of Catterline and the East Coast of Scotland which he loved so much. His work is held in public and private collections worldwide.

A LARGE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH FIGURAL MANTLE CLOCK the 8-day Vincenti et Cie. movement striking on a bell, enamel dial with Roman numerals signed 'Mlle. MINAS in Crieste', the gilt metal case surmounted by a courting couple, 34cm wide 46.5cm high Condition Report : metal a good colour with no obvious losses, enamel dial with some discoloured cracks, movement untested. with pendulum Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting (where possible) any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
Large and impressive mahogany long case clock, 19th century, Benjamin Harlow Lane End. The clock having a white enamel face with painted floral spandrels and arch dial finely with a biblical scene Abraham before angels, Roman dial, date aperture, eight day movement striking on a bell, the case with swan neck pediment, attached turned columns, the trunk having a moulded door flanked by pillared corners, with decorative satinwood inlay, approx 240 cms h.
JASPER TAYLOR, GRAYS INN; a 17th century ebonised bracket clock with cast brass loop handle and four finials to the rectangular case, set with brass face, four applied cherub mask heads and a silver chapter ring bearing Arabic and Roman numerals, with verge and fusee movement, height 37cm.Condition Report: The hinges and locks to both doors may not be original. The clock is clean throughout, especially the movement, There are holes in the back plate which are not used by any part of the machinist or pillars suggesting alterations to the movement or removal of an alarm. The verge may not be original. Elements of the dial may also be replacements. General age wear cracks to the veneer and expected wear consummate with age and use. Wear to the aperture for the dial behind the front door. Overall of a good appearance. Floor of case is in good condition. The clock chimes on a bell. We cannot guarantee that it is in full working order. Dial size is 16.5cm. No pull repeat cord or hole. The small side panels above the glass on either side of the case are larger replacements.
FRANCIS HOLLAND; a George III ebonised eight day twin fusee bracket clock, the brass dial with centred oval signature plaque signed 'Fran. Holland, London' within a silvered chapter ring of Arabic and Roman numerals and subsidiary silent/strike dial to the arch, the four pillar twin fusee movement with bell, height 40cm, width 27cm, dial approx 17.5cm.Condition Report: The movement is clean and bright, some scratches here and there. The floor of the case is intact. Case with expected age wear rubbing, some hair line cracks, tarnishing to metal etc. we cannot guarantee that it is in full working order.
STEADMAN & VARDON, NEW BOND STREET; a George III ebonised bracket clock with four silvered metal acorn finials above the arched silvered dial with chapter ring bearing Arabic and Roman numerals and subsidiary date and strike/silent dials, with striking bell movement, height 52cm.Condition Report: Clock of a good appearance. Case with some repairs and replacements, silver colour metal fittings are not original and the hinges may be replaced. Movement clean and bright but we cannot guarantee that it is in full working order. May have some alterations to movement. Fret side panels a little loose and probably not original.
HENRICUS MONTLON LONDINI; a 17th century and later brass lantern clock, with engraved Roman numeral chapter ring and movement striking on a bell, height 38.5cm, with an associated oak wall bracket.Condition Report: Clock currently running although this is no guarantee of working order, age wear tarnishing throughout and somewhat grubby, the bracket may not be original and has general age wear and discolouration. Not currently running. There are two weights but they are not original and may be too heavy.
A late 19th century walnut and ebonised eight day mantel clock, with enamel Roman numeral dial and movement striking on a bell, height 27cm, with a Victorian black slate eight day mantel clock and an American thirty hour timepiece for Forestville Conn (3).Condition Report: All with general light age wear consistent with age and use, the enamel dial to the walnut clock with some hairline cracks, the glass door to the American clock with some degrading and with some general knocks to the case on this clock, we cannot guarantee that the clocks are in full working order.
WILLIAM MARSTON SALOP; a late George III eight day oak longcase clock, the enamel dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dials and date aperture, with movement striking on a bell, the hood with painted detailing to the frieze and fluted columns above a crossbanded door, on plinth base, height 209cm.Condition Report: The dial has some repainting and slight repairs below the name, general craquelure throughout to the enamel dial, the gilding around the date aperture and the copper rivets around the winding apertures are possibly not original, the base section of the clock appears to have been repaired and there are many later timbers around the plinth box, curved moulding and the blocks supporting the corner fluted pilasters.
EDWARD BROWNE NORWICH; an 18th century and later Chinoiserie eight day longcase clock, with engraved dial and movement striking on a bell, in ebonised Chinoiserie case, height 208cm.Condition Report: Tired in appearance and attention will be needed throughout, currently not running, the movment may not be original to the case and the weights are possibly associated.
