Lot 8

Attischer Glockenkrater, vielleicht Fabre-Maler. Frühes 4. Jh. v. Chr. H 20,4cm, ø Mündung 20,6cm, ø Fuß 9,8cm. Rotfigurig. Kap. 80 Other krater-painters: still early (= J. D. Beazley, Attic Red-Figure Vase-Painters. Attic red-figure bell krater, perhaps Fabre Painter. Early 4th century B.C. On side A mincing silen in front of a maenad with torch. On side B a draped youth. Tiny scratch on side A, otherwise intact. Nice work of the Late Attic vase-production! Provenienz: Ex Gorny & Mosch Auktion 272, 2020, Los 4; aus der Privatsammlung M. P., Österreich, erworben 2012 bei der Galerie Kunst der Antike, Wien; davor in der Sammlung von Professor Ernst Zweymüller (1917-2014). Erworben in den 1960er Jahren.

Lot 81

Reitender Eros. Römische Kaiserzeit, 1. - 2. Jh. n. Chr. H 13cm. Kat.-Nr.8.65; zum Typus vgl.: The Gods Delight. Ausstellung Cleveland (1989) 339 f. Kat.-Nr. 72. Bronze figure of a chubby, child-like Eros in the pose of a rider. Roman Imperial Period, 1st - 2nd century A.D. Attractive green patina, some fingers and right foot broken. Separately worked left wing missing. Right wing partially bent and with some feathers missing. Two holes in the feet probably identify the piece as part of a tintinnabulum, an ancient bell, showing Eros riding on a phallus with little bells hanging down from chains fixed at his feet. Provenienz: Erworben 1974 - 1990 von Dr. Leo Mildenberg für die Sammlung R.G., Deutschland. Ex Gorny & Mosch 222, 2014, 51. In Deutschland seit vor 1990.

Three bell-shaped mugs with the same decoration are recorded, each inscribed on the base 'ExL 1754'. One of these from the Grant Dixon Collection was at Ampleforth Abbey. The second is in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the third is at Colonial Williamsburg. These mugs were instrumental in dating of early 'Scratch Cross' class and by association it is possible to confidently place the current lot around 1754.Although not painted with this pattern, a closely related vase, clearly painted by the same hand from the R David Butti Collection was sold by Bonhams, 10 May 2006, lot 33. A. Lewis & Son, New YorkSimon Spero Exhibition, 1993, no.26Ralph Kenber CollectionThe finely executed landscapes are redolent of the 'Romantic Rocks' and other patterns painted in underglaze blue, but the puce overglaze painting allows for much more intricate detail. A pair of similar mugs was purchased by Lady Charlotte Schreiber from Underhill, Worcester, for £6 in June 1881 and are in the Victoria & Albert Museum (414:576/A-1885). Another mug is illustrated by Simon Spero, The Klepser Collection (1984), colour pl. 27.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
