John Luke (Irish, 1906-1975)Mountain Composition signed and dated 'J. LUKE/39' (lower right)oil on thick card18.6 x 25.6 cm. (7 1/4 x 10 1/8 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceWith John Magee, Belfast (as Composition)With Bell Gallery, Belfast, 1970, where acquired byRobert Boyd Jackson, by whom bequeathed toHarold Kelly, 1994ExhibitedArts Council of Northern Ireland, John Luke, cat.no.41The present work is a charming variant of the larger 1935 oil 'Achill Landscape' (1935, see sale; Adam's, Dublin, 3 December 2008, lot 105). Luke has remained faithful to the earlier composition, dominated by the peak Slievemore, looming over a handful of typical Achill cottages, with only the slightest variation between the two works apparent in palette to the reddish foothills. Luke's link to Achill, was partially through his friendship with Kitt Sheridan (a descendent of Brinsley Sheridan). Staying either with Kitt or at the Amethyst Hotel (a favoured haunt in artistic circles), Luke executed a small number of compositions which draw from the island's dramatic topography. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
