Stopanni, Amsterdam, 19th century The two-section urn surmount outlined pewter scales with ribbon bow crest decorated signature cartouche above applied spirit Fahrenheit and Reaumur scale thermometer to the left hand scale, the centre tube flanked by scales for both English and French barometric inches, the right hand main scale annotated with additional amplified English barometric inches incorporating the Dutch `36` scale calibrated 20-0-16 with the 0 representing the mean pressure at sea level in The Netherlands, the case with parquetry banded broken triangular pediment and vase finial above chevron banded frieze panel and glazed front door with conforming inlay to surround, the box base with three half bell-shaped inserts and two vase shaped pendant finials, 127cm high overall.

Lot 30

An unusual French miniature carriage clock with silent hour repeat, Retailed by Howell James and Co., London, late 19th century. The single train movement with replaced platform lever escapement and hour repeat mechanism on a bell operated via a plunge button to the top of the case, the rectangular white Roman numeral dial with retouched retail signature HOWELL JAMES & Co., TO THE QUEEN to lower margin, the frosted gilt bevel-glazed case with hinged carrying handle above moulded top with canted angles and channel-cut uprights, on conforming ogee moulded base, 8cm high excluding handle. This unusual carriage clock utilises a system similar to those used on some 18th century bracket timepieces in order to repeat the last hour on demand only. This system is often termed a `silent` repeat as the clock does strike during normal operation. The action of depressing the plunger to the top of the case winds a spring which powers the mechanism, hence the absence of a standard second striking barrel within the movement.

Each with eight-day two train striking movement with platform lever escapement and rectangular white enamel Roman numeral dial in a corniche type bevel glazed case, the first striking on a gong and inscribed RUSSELL LTD., LIVERPOOL to dial, 14.5cm high excluding handle; the second bell striking and with engraved presentation inscription, 13cm high excluding handle, (2).

The eight-day two train bell striking movement with original gilt platform lever escapement and numbered 2340 to backplate, the rectangular white enamel Roman numeral dial with subsidiary alarm setting dial beneath to lower margin, the lacquered bevel-glazed case with hinged carrying handle and repeat serial number to base, 13cm high excluding handle. The platform lever escapement used on the current lot with its distinctive right-angled lever layout, `butterfly` endpiece and shaped tail can be directly compared with an example as used by Jacot and Drocourt illustrated in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development on page 114.

The eight-day bell striking movement with gilt platform lever escapement and signed GROHE, Paris to backplate, the rectangular white Roman numeral dial with Gothic trefoil pierced blued steel hands and repeat signature within the lower margin of the minute track, the unusual ripple moulded bevel glazed frosted gilt gorge variant case with shuttered winding holes to the frosted gilt brass back door and hinged carrying handle, 13cm high excluding handle.

The eight-day bell striking movement with mercury compensated pendulum and visible Brocot escapement to the recessed centre of the two piece circular white enamel Roman numeral dial, the frosted gilt brass oval section bevel-glazed case with moulded cornice above front and rear doors and ogee shaped base, 26cm high.

The eight-day bell striking movement stamped PAYNE & C., PARIS to backplate, the thirteen piece blue on white enamel Roman numeral cartouche dial with repeat signature and bevel glazed gilt bezel, the waisted engraved brass and mottled red shell foliate scroll marquetry veneered case with foliate finial to the ogee shaped upstand above winged female mask and scroll cast crest and conforming mounts to front shoulders and knees of the case, on integral splayed supports with decorative apron between, 30cm high.

The single chain fusee movement with anchor escapement set between scroll pierced waisted plates united by six knopped pillars, the pierced silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with blued steel hands within pierced concentric day of the week and date of the month rings with conforming brass hands, on four bell-turned feet, on ovoid red velvet lined ebonised base with bun feet, (lacking glass dome) the clock 43cm (17ins) high, 49cm (19.25ins) high overall.

A Regency inlaid mahogany bracket clock, Barraud, London, early 19th century. The unusual circular five pillar twin chain fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement and pendulum with holdfast attached to the base of the case, the border engraved backplate signed BARRAUD, Cornhill, LONDON to a conforming oval cartouche, the 7 inch cream Roman numeral circular convex dial with repeat signature to centre and gilt spade hands within a convex glazed engine-turned brass bezel, the arch shaped case with hinged brass carrying handle above ebony edged front with scroll line bordered panel beneath dial, on moulded skirt base with brass ball feet, 40.5cm (16ins) high excluding handle. The current lot is probably by Paul Philip Barraud who is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as becoming a Liveryman of the Clockmakers` Company in 1796 and appointed Master in 1810. He is listed as a fine watch and chronometer maker who worked in partnership with W. Howells and G. Jamison for making Mudge`s timekeepers. He had two sons; Frederick Joseph (worked 1806-25), and John (worked from 1813), with whom he formed a partnership in 1811 which presumably lasted until his death in 1820.

The five pillar twin chain fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement and pendulum holdfast mounted on the backplate, the 8 inch circular convex white painted Roman numeral dial signed BARRAUD, LONDON to centre and with blued steel spade hands, the break-arch case with hinged carrying handle to the brass-edged pad top above front door applied with cast brass bezel with convex glass above fishscale frets to lower quadrants, the sides with conforming rectangular sound frets, on moulded base with brass bracket feet, (rear door lacking, case part-disassembled for restoration), 39cm (15.5ins) high excluding handle. Paul Philip Barraud is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as becoming a Liveryman of the Clockmakers` Company in 1796 and appointed Master in 1810. He is listed as a fine watch and chronometer maker who worked in partnership with W. Howells and G. Jamison for making Mudge`s timekeepers. A French Empire style ormolu figural mantel clock, Unsigned, mid 19th century. The eight-day countwheel bell striking movement with circular white enamel Roman numeral convex dial with blued steel Breguet hands and foliate milled bezel, set into an ogee-shouldered plinth with foliate spray applied lower quadrants and supporting a music stand for a cherub stood on a cushioned stool and leaning on a columnar pedestal whilst playing his woodwind instrument to the right of the movement, on rectangular plinth base applied with a relief panel cast with a musical trophy to apron and on engine turned bell-shaped feet, 27cm high.

A French Louis Philippe ormolu and patinated bronze figural mantel clock, Durand, Paris, circa 1840. The eight-day striking movement with silk suspension and signed Durand a Paris to backplate, the circular gilt Roman numeral dial with recessed centre, Breguet hands and foliate cast bezel set into cast bronze rocky outcrop flanked by a pair of cherubs making arrows for cupid, on rectangular plinth base applied with cast bow and quiver ribbon-tied mount to apron above leaf mounded skirt, (formerly with `waterfall` automaton, lacking bell), 29cm high.

The eight-day bell striking movement stamped LEFEBVRE & FILS, PARIS to backplate and with marble dial applied with gilt Roman numerals within a glazed hinged bezel, the plinth-form case with moulded top above recessed patinated metal figural relief frieze panels cast with standing Classical robed figures continuing to the sides decorated with war chariots, on cavetto moulded base with gilt scroll cast splayed bracket feet, (designed to take a bronze sculptural surmount), 22.5cm high. Provenance: The Late Mr Michael Stoop.

Provenance: The property of a private collector. Thomas Porthouse is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London c1820-60, Baillie notes in his entry that Thomas Porthouse was Turret Clockmaker to The Admiralty.

The five pillar twin chain fusee bell striking movement with original anchor escapement and foliate engraved backplate signed John Warry, BRISTOL to centre and fitted with a pendulum holdfast clamp, the 8 inch cream painted Roman numeral break-arch dial with repeat signature to centre and subsidiary STRIKE/SILENT dial to arch, the break-arch case with brass carrying handle above line inlaid front door and brass fishscale arched side frets, on moulded skirt base with contre-partie brass foliate marquetry panel to apron, 43cm (17ins) high excluding handle. The current lot could have been made by either John Warry senior or his son of the same name. Both are recorded in Moore, A.J. THE CLOCKMAKERS OF BRISTOL 1650-1900 with John senior working from Redcliffe Street 1783-1821, and John junior working presumably from the same address 1830-58.

The five pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement, strike/silent lever and signed Grant, Fleet Street, LONDON to the lancet shaped backplate, the 7 inch circular silvered brass Roman numeral circular dial with repeat signature to centre, blued steel Breguet style hands and convex glazed cast bezel, the case with crescent shaped amboyna inlaid panel above dial and satinwood banded interlaced ebony line lozenge decorated panel infill to apron within ebony ground repeating lozenge border and with gilt slender three-quarter columns to angles, the sides with gilt lion mask ring handles above brass tracery pierced Gothic side frets, on stepped skirt base with ebonised mouldings and later cast paw feet, 41cm (16ins) high. John Grant junior who is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working from Fleet Street 1817-67. The bespoke nature of the movement with its lancet shaped plates and the high quality of the veneers suggests that the current lot was made to order for a particularly discerning client.

An Irish early Victorian mahogany precision eight-day longcase clock, Sharp, Dublin, circa 1840. The four pillar rack and bell striking movement with deadbeat escapement, Harrison`s maintaining power and wood-rod pendulum, the 12 inch circular white Roman numeral dial signed SHARP, DUBLIN to centre and with blued steel hands, the break-arch case with brass bezel to the circular glazed aperture of the hood door above break-arch door to trunk and plain plinth base with moulded skirt, 200cm (78.5ins), high. Christopher Sharp(e) is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in Dublin circa 1824.

Lot 94

An Irish George III mahogany eight-day longcase clock, John Ottiwell, Limerick, circa 1770. The four pillar rack and bell striking movement with 13 inch square brass dial with subsidiary seconds dial, ringed winding holes and calendar aperture to the matted centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes to outer track and signed John Ottiwell, Limerick to lower edge, the angles with scroll cast spandrels, in a case with swan neck pediment and foliate scroll carved swollen frieze above fluted pilasters to hood, break-arch door flanked by canted angles to trunk, on a reduced shaped-panel fronted plinth base with bracket feet, 227cm (89.5ins) high. John Ottiwell is recorded in Ferrar`s Limerick Dictionary of 1769 as a watchmaker working in Main Street East. Another perhaps slightly earlier clock by David Gordon of Dublin in a related case was sold in these rooms 10/02/2009 lot 154.

*A George III mahogany eight-day longcase clock with moonphase, John Healy, Manchester, early 19th century. The four pillar rack and bell striking movement with 13 inch white painted Roman numeral break-arch dial with arched calendar aperture, subsidiary seconds dial and signed J`no Healy, MANCHESTER to the ho-ho bird decorated centre, within chapter ring with Arabic five minutes and fruit painted spandrels beneath arch with rolling moonphase, in a case with verre eglomise fronted swan neck pediment above fluted columns to hood, swollen frieze over shaped-top crossbanded door flanked by quarter columns and with squat panel beneath to trunk, on oval panel veneered plinth base with ogee bracket feet, 220cm (86.5ins) high. A John Healey is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in Manchester 1777-1814.

Lot 97

An unusual small brass mounted table clock with rocking figure automaton, Now bearing signature for Vulliamy, London, basically early 19th century. The five pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement and shouldered plates, the pallet arbor fitted with an arm applied with a pivoted figure of a seaman who `dances` within a crescent shaped scene of sailors playing instruments and dancing on the deck of a ship, the 6 inch cream painted convex Roman numeral dial now bearing signature VULLIAMY, LONDON to centre and now in a single pad top break-arch case with brass carrying handle above brass fillet bordered crescent aperture for the automaton and glazed circular glass bezel for the dial, the sides with arched brass fishscale sound frets, on moulded skirt base with brass claw and ball feet, 36cm (14ins) high excluding handle.

A Regency mahogany bracket clock, William Stephenson, London, early 19th century. The twin fusee five pillar bell striking movement with anchor escapement and pendulum holdfast to the border-engraved shouldered backplate signed Wm. Stephenson, London to lower margin, the 7 inch white painted Roman numeral break-arch dial with blued steel Breguet hands and subsidiary STRIKE/SILENT dial to arch, the break-arch case with brass carrying handle and cavetto moulding above brass-fillet inset front door and rectangular fishscale sound frets to sides, on moulded skirt base with brass bracket feet, 37cm (14.5ins) high excluding handle. The current was probably made by William Stevenson who is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as gaining his freedom of the Clockmakers` Company in 1794.

A Regency ebony and brass inlaid mahogany bracket clock, Dutton, London, early 19th century. The five pillar twin chain fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement and thick brass shouldered plates, the backplate signed Dutton, LONDON to centre, the 7 inch circular cream painted Roman numeral convex dial with gilt crossed open moonpoise hands and signed DUTTON, Fleet Street, LONDON to centre, the break-arch single-pad top case with ebonised arch mouldings above brass foliate inlaid shaped panel beneath dial flanked by ebony and brass line inlaid canted angles, the sides with arched brass fishscale sound frets, with reeded collar to the stepped base and on brass ball feet, (case seriously distressed, lacking rear door bezel and other sections), 39cm (15.5ins) high. Matthew Dutton and Sons are recorded in Baillie G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London 1815-25. Matthew Dutton`s father, William (worked 1746-94), was an important maker who in went into partnership with Thomas Mudge at Fleet Street in 1755, later succeeding him in 1771 when Mudge retired from the business to pursue the development of his marine timekeepers. Matthew worked with his father until 1799 then in partnership with his brother, Thomas until 1804, and then finally with his son, also called Matthew from 1815 until his death in 1825. Although the current lot is in distressed condition the movement has survived in good order hence could be brought back by someone with good cabinet making skills, with the loss of the cast brass bezel being perhaps the most significant issue.

A Regency mahogany weight-driven drop trunk wall clock, Robert Fletcher, Chester, early 19th century. The four pillar two train bell striking movement with anchor escapement and half-seconds pendulum, the 15 inch circular white Roman numeral dial signed ROB`T FLETCHER, CHESTER to centre, the case with moulded surround to the circular hood door above shaped ears and concave-topped caddy moulded rectangular door to trunk, and reeded panel to the curved base, 119cm (47ins) high.

An Austrian ebonised miniature grande sonnerie table clock, Joseph Bauer, Debretzin, late 18th century. The short-duration triple train movement with verge escapement striking the quarters on a bell and sounding the hour every quarter on a larger bell, the 3.5 inch brass break-arch dial with false bob aperture to the foliate scroll engraved centre within applied Roman numeral chapter ring with lozenge half hour markers, arcaded minute ring and Arabic five minutes to outer track, the angles with scroll cast spandrels beneath arch centred with a domed boss signed Joseph Bauer, Debretzin within conforming engraved infill, the inverted bell-top case with cast brass putto surmount and vase finials above engraved brass foliate frets to the upper quadrants of the giltwood mounted front door, the sides with conforming lozenge shaped frets over break-arch side windows, on moulded base with brass paw feet, the clock 26cm high (10.25ins) high, 29.5cm (11.75) ins high including surmount.

A French Louis XIV ormolu mounted tortoiseshell bracket clock, Antoine Gaudron, Paris, circa 1700 The six back-pinned baluster pillar movement of two week duration with large spring barrels, verge escapement with silk suspension and cycloidal cheeks, and high position numbered countwheel to the upper right hand corner of the backplate for striking the hours and once at the half hour with a vertically pivoted hammer on a bell mounted within the top of the case, the backplate signed Gaudron A Paris to lower edge, the unusual shaped iron dial plate faced with pewter polished and lacquered to simulate mother-of-pearl and applied with twelve-piece white enamel Roman numeral cartouche chapter ring with fine pierced and engraved foliate pendant to every numeral, Arabic minutes to outer track and original steel hands above shaped pendulum aperture bordered with foliate cast mounts, the break-arch case with gilt urn finials to the acanthus corner-mounted ogee shaped upstand and foliate cast frieze emerging from the sides of the gilt cavetto moulded cornice, the canted front angles applied with fine scroll-cast female terms above acanthus open scrolls, the sides with brass-edged rectangular side windows and conforming terms to rear edges over swollen lower sections, the base edged with a gilt band interrupted by a pendant arch inset with foliate cast mount to apron, on acanthus cast feet, 53cm (21ins) high. Antoine Gaudron is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working from around 1675. In 1689 he was established at Place Dauphine at `La Perle` and then at `La Renommee` in 1709. He died a wealthy man in 1714. Two fine `Religieuse` spring clocks by him (including one with unique astronomical calendar) are illustrated in Plomp, Reinier Early French Pendulum Clocks 1658-1700 pages 80-3, the movement of the current lot, although slightly later, is remarkably similar to those pictured in figs 146 and 149. The manner in which the dial of the current lot is finished is particularly noteworthy. A pewter veneer is applied over the iron dial plate which is polished and finished in such a way as to simulate mother-of-pearl, forming the background onto which a finely engraved and pierced chapter ring is applied.

A French Louis XV-XVI transitional ormolu mounted boulle bracket clock, Sandoz, Laine, Paris, circa 1775. The circular two train movement with four column turned pillars pinned through the rear, anchor escapement and striking the hours via a numbered outside countwheel on a bell mounted on the backplate signed Sandoz Laine, Paris to lower margin, the 7 inch circular convex Roman numeral enamel dial with Arabic five minutes to outer track and finely pierced engraved hands behind an engine turned convex glazed bezel, the waisted case veneered in contre-partie with foliate designs in brown, cream and red stained shell within a brass field, the ogee shaped surmount with leaf festoon swag adorned classical urn finial and finely chased rococo edge mounts above front with further symmetric open-work leafy foliate trail mounts to edges, the sides with brass sound fret infilled shaped cartouches and conforming mounts to rear angles, the apron with shaped glazed lenticle flanked by integral scroll mounts issuing squab feet, 59cm overall.

Lot 111

A Germanic gilt brass small hexagonl horizontal table clock with alarm, C.L. Leysaht, Zittau, early 18th century. The six pillar rack and bell striking movement with fusee and verge escapement regulated by a monometallic sprung balance to going train, the strike train with standing barrel and sounding on a bell mounted within the base of the case, the alarm train with further standing barrel and verge operated hammer on the same bell, the backplate with foliate scroll pierced balance bridge, silvered regulation dial and signed C L Lesaht, Zittau to one edge, the dial with pewter alarm setting disc within conforming applied 3 inch Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes to outer track, with steel beetle-and-poker hands, the horizontal case with caddy moulded dial surround above glazed sides divided by line-engraved pilasters to angles, on cavetto moulded base with six disc turned feet, (strike train with replacements), 10cm (4ins) wide.

Lot 113

A forged iron domestic `great chamber clock` movement, Probably German or Swiss, late 16th century. The two train movement with forged wheels and sprung pawl clicks to the pulleys, the going train originally with verge and foliate regulation now converted to verge and short pendulum, the strike train with internal fly and pivoted external hammer linkage lever (lacking lifting detent arbor and countwheel), the frame with one-piece forged upper and lower rings secured to the angled strip corner posts via wedged mortice and tenon joints, the upper terminals of the corner uprights worked into decorative flared scrolls, the base with outswept feet, the front with pinion to drive dial motionwork and four holes to the frame for securing a dial (lacking), the frame 44.5cm (17.5ins) high; with a forged iron bell bearer of similar date with integral top-pivoted hammer and large lugged bell. The current lot can be compared to a similar example sold at Sotheby`s, New York MASTERPIECES FROM THE TIME MUSEUM, PART FOUR VOLUME 1 13/10/2004, Lot 500. The presence of a pinion to drive motionwork and holes for attaching a dial to the front of the frame indicates that this movement was originally fitted with a dial hence was probably designed to be installed where it could be seen, perhaps in the great hall of a substantial house.

Lot 114

A George III oak thirty hour longcase clock of small proportions, Joseph Wright, Warwick, circa 1780. The plated countwheel bell striking single-handed movement with 8.25 inch square brass dial signed WRIGHT, WARWICK to the starburst and foliate scroll engraved centre within applied Roman numeral chapter ring and rococo scroll cast spandrels to angles, the case with later swan neck crest to the cavetto moulded cornice above slender baluster turned pilasters flanking dial and narrow rectangular caddy-moulded door to trunk, on plain plinth base, 191cm (75ins) high excluding later crest, 200cm (78.75) ins high overall. Joseph Wright is recorded in Baillie G.H. Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World as working in Warwick 1771-95.
