Attributed to LAWRENCE STEPHEN LOWRY oil on board - landscape with distant football field and figures and buildings beyond, signed and dated 1946 and in crayon on the original board 'Peel Park, Salford' and in ink a simply written title 'Peel Park, Salford', 43 x 36 cms(Provenance: This painting has been in the continual possession of the eighty-one year old vendor since 1957. He married his late wife (born and bred in Salford) at about this time. In his capacity as a television engineer for Telefusion, he was approached by a neighbour of his wife’s family, one Ernie Bell (or Bull) who lived in Orrell Street, Salford to repair his faulty television set. A new Cathode Ray Tube was acquired and the repair was duly completed and declared as a “no charge” favour. Ernie Bell (or Bull) was a casual companion of L S Lowry (known to his friend as “Larry”) and accompanied the artist on his frequent sketching jaunts to Peel Park and to other locations in the Salford area. It might be a subject for speculation that there was an element of “collaboration” by the two in the preparation of this work. In lieu of payment for the television repair, our client was gifted the painting of Peel Park by Ernie Bell which came into his possession as a “discard” from L S Lowry. It has remained with our client ever since. The jagged edge of one side of the board may suggest that the painting started life off as a bigger work, but if so the overall composition has been little affected. A full three sheet typed declaration by the vendor accompanies the Lot and a pre-sale copy can be available on request. (Note - other work by L S Lowry in this auction have not been consigned by the vendor of this painting)
