Ruskin (John, art critic and social critic, 1819-1900) Autograph Letter signed to his Mother, 2½p., 8vo, Winnington, [Cheshire], 22nd May [c. ?1860s], describing a dance at Winnington School in which he had been involved with his young friend Lily Armstrong, "They opened [at Winnington School] a new playroom yesterday which Miss Bell has just roofed in for them and the little ones had determined to wait for me to have the first game with them in it. So we began with a grand game of cat and mouse - and then at dropping the handkerchief - and then we had Irish quadrilles - which end with a wonderful dance in a labyrinth of rings, and as I was to have Lily for partner I put my coat on a wrong side before to look like an Irishman; Lily highly approved of this arrangement... Lily at last pulled it off me altogether and put it on herself over her frock and tied her hair up in a hard knot and then we had an Irish quadrille to purpose - till I had no more breath left", folds, slightly browned.⁂ Ruskin first met Lily Armstrong when she was a 12-year-old schoolgirl at Winnington, the girls' boarding-school in Cheshire run by the financially inept Margaret Alexis Bell with considerable interest and assistance from Ruskin himself. He was a regular visitor to the school, where he not only proceeded with his own writing but joined in games and dancing with the girls. His friendship with Lily lasted long beyond her schooldays and after her marriage, and was evidently deeply affectionate on both sides.
Sherlock Holmes & Dr Watson.- Doyle (Sir Arthur Conan, writer, 1859-1930) Autograph Postcard signed to R. Pascoe, 1 side, 89 x 115mm., Windlesham [House], Crowborough, Sussex, [c. 1920], on the influence of his mentor Joseph Bell at Edinburgh University medical school and his fictional creation of Sherlock Holmes, "It is a fact that Holmes has some traits of Dr Bell of Edinburgh. To say that he is entirely based upon him would be an exaggeration. My first book (I have written stories since 1878) was 'A Study in Scarlet', a Sherlock Holmes booklet published as Beetons Annual in 1888".⁂ Joseph Bell (1837-1911), surgeon. "Bell was a master of deduction from minutiae of evidence, such as gravel on a shoe conveying a patient's route to work, the better to impress the patient and his own attendant students. Otherwise, Bell was austere and scientific with students and patients, in contrast to Sir Patrick Heron Watson, of whom it was said that 'nobody in Scotland was ready to die until they had first seen Watson'. The contrast between Bell's and P. H. Watson's manners survives in Holmes's cold-bloodedness contrasted with John Watson's humanity." - Oxford DNB.
Kempe, a 19th century stained glass panel, of a saint with heraldic device, 68ins x 14insProvenance: Diocese of Litchfield, redundant churchesCondition Report: Charles E Kempe (1837-1907) produced over 4000 designs for windows and altar frontals. The important makers, Clayton & Bell, asked Kempe in 1866 to design a window for Gloucester Cathedral (Bishop Hooper). The rest, as they say, is history, and in 1866 Kempe started his own business in London and he became the most important designer in the UK.
A Pair of Stereo Daguerreotypes of John Bell Statues at the Crystal Palace. 'Andromeda'* with applied label 'Carpenter & Westley, Opticians, 24 Regent St, London' to rear. Also 'Dorothea', with an applied 'Negretti & Zambra' label to rear. Inscribed 'Dorothea, Crystal Palace' in a contemporary hand. (both condition 5). Very difficult to photograph so the images shown may not do justice to the item - viewing in person is recommended. *Interestingly, the text on the plinth in this image reads the correct way round, which is 'wrong' for a normal daguerreotype. This could possibly be explained by it being an uncommon copy but there are references to daguerreotype photographers shooting through a mirror or prism to correct the reversed image. Either way, a rare 'conversation piece'. (Cabinet L)

Rolex, Oyster Perpetual Submariner Comex, Ref. 5513, a stainless steel bracelet watch, no. 2833604, circa 1971, automatic movement, 26 jewels, cal. 1520, black replacement service dial, applied luminous dot and baton markers, luminous pointed baton minute and Mercedes hour hands, centre seconds hand, rotating black bezel with Arabic numeral 10 minute track, helium escape valve, screw down crown, screw down case back, stamped ROLEX COMEX, on a Rolex stainless steel Oyster bracelet with fold over clasp, case back, dial, movement, crown and clasp signed, diameter 39mm, bracelet 17.5cm Coming from the family of the owner, this dive watch was worn by Johny Henry Simpson, who was more commonly known as Jack Simpson. John joined the Royal Navy prior to the 2nd World War, where he was deployed on Arctic Convoy duties. These were some of the most hazardous convoys carried out by both the Merchant and Royal Navy personnel. During his time spent in the service of the Royal Navy, John had learnt to dive. By the time he left the Royal Navy he was fully qualified as a Diver. This allowed him to gain the position as a diver on the Manchester Ship Canal, where he worked on the main dock area at the Manchester end of the canal. Here John became one of the top divers and went on to train many of the assistant divers. One of his pupils joined Comex to work on the North Sea rigs. During this time John was approached with further recommendations for divers to work at Comex, with eventually John being asked himself to dive with Comex on the rigs. John did this for a short while, but eventually had to give up diving due to health issues. Upon retiring from his diving career he was presented with this Rolex Submariner by his initial pupil. This Submariner, the reference 5513, features a helium escape valve at 9 o’clock, a new development for divers working from a diving bell in a helium-rich environment. This is the earliest example of the use of an HEV, a detail that would be used in the Submariner reference 5514 and finally find a home in the Rolex Sea Dweller reference 1665.
