A good yew wood and elm Windsor armchair, by Robert Prior of Uxbridge, early 19th century the bow shaped back with Prince of Wales feather splats, raised on turned legs united by a crinoline stretcher, seat back bears makers stamp Robert Prior (1780-1853) was of the second generation of the Prior Family of Uxbridge, Middlesex. The Priors are synonymous with quality Windsor chair making and Robert Prior, who took over the running of the company from his father, is the most celebrated of the six family chair makers. The use of quality woods, bell shaped seats, and triple splats in two lengths to fit the back hoop are all characteristics of their chairs. A 19th century bronzed metal and gilt metal mounted mantel clock, the case surmounted by a mediaeval monarch on horseback, the base with polished marble rectangular panels enclosed by gilt metal mounts of flowers foliage and military trophies, having a 9.5cm. enamel dial signed 'Ducas, Paris', the twin cylinder circular movement with outside striking to a bell, on an oval ebonised plinth base and contained under a glass dome, 56cm. high.

Highrs.); 1914 Star (Capt., R. Sc. Fus.) very fine (2) £300-350 Alexander Murray MacGregor Bell was born in Weymouth on 4 September 1880, the second son of William Bell of Stirling, late Lieutenant-Colonel, 56th Regiment. Educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Kingston and Stirling High School, he was gazetted into the 3rd (Militia) Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders on 30 December 1901. With them he served in South Africa and was awarded the Queen’s medal with two clasps. He was gazetted into the Royal Garrison Artillery in February 1903 and was transferred to the Dorset Regiment in May 1905. He was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to the Royal Scots Fusiliers in January 1907 and advanced to Captain in May 1912. From May 1904 to May 1905 he was A.D.C. to the Governor of Natal and was Superintendent Gymnasia, Scottish Command, February 1913-November 1914, when he rejoined his battalion in Flanders. He was appointed Adjutant in December 1914. Captain Bell was wounded at Ypres on 19 February 1918 and died of his wounds in London on 28 April 1918 and was buried in All Saints Cemetery, Kensall Green, London. He was mentioned in Field Marshal Sir John French’s despatch of 31 May 1915. The officer commanding his battalion, writing to his parents, said of him, ‘The regiment was moving across some open ground under heavy shell fire, and your son and I were together at the moment we were both knocked over. He was hit on the back and right arm. I can only assure you that his gallantry and devotion to duty has been most marked’. Sold with copied research and photograph.

A brass ship's bell from the 'Lord Cromer', Liverpool within an arched tubular framed mounting bracket with turned finial, inscribed 'Lord Cromer, Liverpool' in blackened capital letters 33cm wide, 38cm high, 18cm diameter Note: The Lord Cromer was a merchant ship, registered in Liverpool, which set off on her maiden voyage in 1912, bound for Louisburg, Nova Scotia. She was badly holed by ice on the journey and had to put in for repairs at Halifax. The facilities were not available and she had to proceed, in a crippled state, to New York in order to have the repairs made. Over a period of years, the ship was sold to other lines and renamed more than once. She finally sank in a collision off Duncansby Head, north east Scotland in 1942.

WINHOLDT, MICHEL A FINE DRAWING OF A 48 POUNDER AND A 24 POUNDER DECORATED CANNON, BOTH DATED 1646 63.5cm; 25in by 16cm; 6 1/4in and 51.5cm; 20 1/4in x 14cm; 5 1/2in respectively (2) ink on paper (each with a repaired clean tear), the 48 pounder signed and dated within a cartouche over the first reinforce and inscribed '8 lodt Eissen' [48 pounds], the 24 pounder signed and dated around the base-ring '4 lodt Eissen' [24 pounds], both framed and glazed The Weinholdt (Weinhold) family are recorded as a family of gun and bell founders originating in Danzig. Late in the 17th Century they moved to Dresden where they succeeded the Herolds as chief founders to the Electors of Saxony. The present drawings are in keeping with contemporary British 'demi-cannon' and 'whole cannon' later known as cannon of 7 and cannon of 6 respectively. See H. L. Blackmore 1976 and A. N.
