A red-figure bell krater with an inverted bell-shaped body, decorated on both sides with a female face in profile, wearing a pearled stephane, long pendant earrings, a necklace of black pearls and looking into a mirror; foliage and vegetal pattern in shape of palmette under the small looped handles; meander decoration below the rim. Cf. Lojacono, A., 'Vasi Apuli a Milano, Nuove Acquisizioni' in LANX, 24, 2016, fig.7, no.4, pp.94-95. 1.27 kg, 24.2 cm high (9 1/2 in). Acquired 1960-1980. Dr Harold Berry, North London, UK. The images of the palmettes under the handles in this typology, is usually specular. Each figure was silhouetted against a black background, allowing painters to portray details with more accuracy and variety. A carved wood figure of Mary and Child; Mary in floor-length tiered robe with bell sleeves, and mantle draped to the shoulders, standing contrapposto supporting Jesus on her left side above her hip; her face and hair carefully carved with fine facial detailing; Jesus shown wearing a robe held from the waist, supporting a book in his cupped left hand; Mary wearing a separate silver-gilt crown with strawberry-leaf upstands supported on a beaded wire frame; silver base with textured rim and openwork trefoils to the upper edge. 533 grams, 31.5 cm high including stand (1 2 3/8 in). DIARIES & PHOTOGRAPH ALBUMS : kept by Phylis Mary Bell (b 1906, Stockport) A unique collection of six diaries come log books of her travels during the first half of the last century. There are eleven photograph albums varying from Widecombe in the Moor (Dartmoor) to Peru, different sizes and a variety of bindings. Included is an extremely large post card album. She must have kept every postcard that was sent to her. There is a quantity of ephemera relating to the Blue Star line, including a match box cover and an ash tray with the Arandora Star's crest on them. Sixteen larger size sepia photographs mounted on card on both sides, mostly by Frith. Rather charmingly is a large ( 390 x 310 mm ) tinted signed photograph of Phylis as a young child with her mother, who must have contributed to the taking of the photographs.

Ralph Hedley (1848 - 1913) : Ding Dong Bell, oil on canvas, 64 cm x 52 cm, framed. Provenance : This painting was loaned by the vendor to The Laing Art Gallery for the exhibition "Ralph Hedley, Tyneside Painter, 1990 - 91". CONDITION REPORT: As well as carrying the title on the reverse of the canvas, it is also inscribed "Roger Hedley, Exor", Roger Hedley being an executor if the artist's estate. Also the name of the children featuring in the painting are giiven as Elsie, Florence, Roger, Ralph and Fred Hedley.
