An extremely rare Worcester mug, circa 1756-58Of bell shape with a grooved loop handle, finely painted in blue with an unusual version of the 'Beckoning Chinaman' pattern, the robed gentleman with his left hand raised, a boy carrying a quiver also pointing to a flock of birds in the sky above, the reverse with budding prunus issuing from the rocky landscape, 11.7cm high, TF workman's mark as well as a letter 'P'Footnotes:Whilst the 'Beckoning Chinaman' is one of the best-known patterns on Worcester mugs and tankards, it is invariably painted in bright overglaze enamels. This mug appears to be the only known example of the pattern painted in underglaze blue. The usual famille rose spray or secondary figure subject seen on the reverse of the enamelled mugs has been replaced with a continuous landscape of rocks and budding prunus.
