Mills to Attenborough MILLS JOHN (1908-2005) English Actor, Academy Award winner. Series of six A.Ls.S and six T.Ls.S., Johnnie, thirteen pages (total), 8vo and 4to, and a couple on correspondence cards, various places (Surrey, Mayfair, Beverly Hills etc.), 1963-75, all to Richard Attenborough (invariably addressed 'Darling Dickie' or 'Darling Dickie Boy', some also to his wife). Mills writes a largely social series of letters to his friend and colleague, in part, 'Thank you so much for remembering me on Thursday night at the Garrick. The critics haven't been too kind to us but we are waiting to see what the public think' (23rd September 1963), 'What a marvellous birthday, I will never forget it. Mary collected all the people that I really love and wanted to see' (25th February 1965), 'Just to let you know how it all goes. Mixed Reviews for Film & David L. & Bolt - but personally I couldn't have asked for better - I suspect Mary wrote them!....luxuriating here in a glorious penthouse with two roof gardens. MGM treating us Royally. May have to fly home next week as J. McCann Esq has fucked off!! Left his wife & 2 children in our cottage with no means of support!!!....wife in tears daily - don't we love the staff?!!' (15th November 1970), 'Just read in Sunday Express that England play Germany next Wednesday & Ramsey has dropped Banks!' (23rd November 1970), 'thank you for remembering me in Edinburgh - all going well - rehearsing & polishing every day - it's strange & rather exhilarating to be back where I started 40 years ago!' (15th February 1972), 'Good 1st Night - usual mixed Bag of W[illiam] D[ouglas] Home notices - they hate him don't they? B. office healthy - we did £6000 on 1st 5 shows' (8th October 1973). Together with a T.L.S. by Mary Hayley Bell inviting the Attenborough's to s secret birthday party for her husband, 2nd February 1965, and an A.L.S. and T.L.S. by Hayley Mills, both thanking Attenborough and his wife for telegrams on her first nights and commenting 'It was enormously encouraging just as I was seriously contemplating escaping through the lavatory window! (1970) and 'It was hell - s'pose they always are, worse hell if it's s'posed to be a comedy!!' (1975). A couple of the letters are accompanied by typed carbon copies of Attenborough's replies. Henry Tory, Hale, an oak longcase clock, the 8-day two-weight movement striking the hours on a bell, with the twelve-inch arched brass dial signed above moon-phase in arch, Henry Tory, Hale, with black Roman numerals and Arabic five-minute markings, seconds dial and date aperture, the oak case with shaped trunk door, arched hood and brass-mounted columns, 83in (211cm) high.
An early 19thC Bracket Clock by Reid and Auld, Edinburgh, the arched mahogany case with brass fabric-backed fretwork panels above and below the dial, and brass fish scale fabric-backed arched grilles on each side, surmounted by a brass handle, the painted dial with Roman numerals and signed 'Reid and Auld, Edinburgh', fitted with an eight day twin fusee movement, striking on a bell, on brass bracket feet, 19½in (49.5cm) high to top of brass handle.

A French alabaster mantel clock, late 19th century, gilt brass mounted with an urn finial, the twin train movement striking on a bell, stamped 'John Bennett, 64 & 65 Cheapside, London', '4', '8', 'Medallion d'Or' mark, and '930', raised on six lobed bun feet, on a separate giltwood base, and further oval ebonised base, with pendulum and two keys, 27 by 15 by 46cm.
A French gilt brass mantel clock, 19th century, with cast floral swags, stiff leaf, floral and foliate decoration, inset porcelain plaques decorated with pink ground and floral sprays and a cherub, urn surmount with twin goat mask handles, the twin train movement chiming n a bell, marked 'CMF' and '4.11', circular porcelain face with pink ground and floral decoration with gold Roman numerals and minute markers, with pendulum, 31 by 15 by 32.5cm high.
A late 19th century Scottish mahogany long case clock, eight day twin train movement striking on bell, the domed face painted with 'Burns', 'Ramsay', 'Fergusson', 'Scott' to the spandrels and 'Lady of the Lake' to the dome, the white face with black painted Roman numerals and minute band, subsidiary second and date dials, the pendulum with pained thistle decoration, the squared hood with pierced pediment, plain trunk with fluted quarter pilasters, raised on a plinth base and small flattened feet, 50 by 23 by 227cm high.

Condition Report. To be used as a guide only. Sold with key and pendulum. Running. Females upper torso and globe pedestal loose, need tightening from underneath. One foot loose. Hair cracking to 12 o clock on the enamel dial and slight chips around the winding holes.
