A glass painting of birds and flowers in an urn. Painted frame. Family tradition suggests that this was either a student piece by Dora Carrington or the work of one of her close friends. The vendors grandmother Barbara Hiles worked with Virginia and Leonard Wolf and was at the Slade with Carrington she was later the mistress of Clive Bell and nursed him in his last years. The vendor spent many holidays with her grandmother at Charleston. Sold with a copy of a photograph of the previous owner Barbara Hiles and a copy of a drawing by Carrington but signed by Duncan Grant

ART DECO MARBLE AND OYNX CLOCK GARNITURE maker R. Miandres, the clock mounted with cold painted figure of a girl and greyhound, square arabic dial, the repeating movement chiming on a bell, the case with bevelled glass, signed, 31cm high; with floral garniture vases of bell form, 25cms high.
Kathleen Scott (1878-1947). A bronze model of possibly Sir Peter Scott as a young boy, the base signed `K. Bruce Scott`, the underside with a clapper and the sculpture used as a table bell, 4½in (11.6cm) high, 3¼in (8.4cm) wide. Provenance: Sold with a typed letter from Seldon`s Ltd, Eastbourne recounting a letter written by Sir James Barrie (Peter Scott`s godfather) in May 1914 with regards a bronze bell he had been given.
A steel barrelled flintlock blunderbuss pistol, c 1785, 14¼” overall, bell mouth barrel 9” with Tower private proofs and originally with spring bayonet on the right side released by a thumb catch on the lock, the breech flat retaining traces of “London”; the flat stepped lock with swan neck cock and large roller on frizzen spring, the plate with traces of maker’s name “Grice”; walnut fullstock with flat sided chequered butt, plain steel mounts including large oval escutcheon and trigger guard with acorn finial, and plain wooden ramrod. GWO & basically GC (worn overall, bayonet lug and catch removed, patched repairs to fore end). Plate 8

THOMAS DE QUINCY "Confessions of an English Opium Eater", published by James Hogg, Edinburgh and R. Greenbridge & Sons, London, second edition, leather bound with gilt decorated spine, together with CURRER BELL "Jane Eyre: An Autobiography", copyright edition in two volumes, volume one published by Leipzig Bernard Tauchnitz 1850 with marbled effect cloth boards and green and gilt decorated leather spine, bears library labels inscribed "William Agnew" with a further label inscribed "To Cicely Agnew in Memory of her Grandfather October 31st 1910" and another "R.Kingzett", together with volume two CONDITION REPORTS All with various labels and inscriptions. "Confessions ..." - binding with various wear, scuffs and dirt, pages with some discolouration and foxing, some very slight separation to front page and to inside front cover, but overall condition appears reasonable. Other two volumes with quite a lot of damage to spines and heavy wear to covers, some separating, discolouration to pages, covers coming apart from spine, and pages separating from spine.

A George III mahogany crossbanded oak longcase clock, 33cm arched painted dial. convex Arabic chapter, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, floral spandrels, Adam and Eve automaton to arch, twin winding holes, signed Mawkes/Derby, the eight day movement striking on a bell, hood with swan neck cornice terminating in brass stamped roundels, centred with a ball and spire finial, turned columns, shaped door to waist flanked by canted angles, outswept base, bracket feet, 218cm high, c.1830 ***William Mawkes was the fourth son of Thomas Mawkes (1740-1821) a former apprentice and employee of the celebrated John Whitehurst, FRS. William, who was born in 1782, worked with his father until his death and then on his own account until c. 1830. This is the first recorded example of an automaton clock by this maker.

A George III oak longcase clock with eight day movement striking on a bell, the square brass dial with silvered chapter ring inscribed `Cartwright, Newcastle`, framing a matt centre with subsidiary seconds and date aperture, cornered by pierced gilt spandrels, the hood with broken arch pediment above a glazed door and reeded columns, the trunk with arched door flanked by reeded quarter columns, on a plain base and plinth, height approx 215cm, together with pendulum and two weights (alterations and restoration).
