* A GERMAN 7X57mm BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE REBARRELLED BY W.J. JEFFERY & CO., serial no. 35799, 23 3/4in. blued nitro barrel signed 'NEW BARREL BY. W.J. JEFFERY & CO. LTD., 26 BURY ST., ST. JAMES' LONDON S.W.', block-mounted bead fore-sight, block-mounted rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves, blued receiver, 15in. figured pistolgrip stock, chequered grip and fore-end, horn fore-end cap and pistolgrip-cap, set triggers, silver escutcheon, sling eyes, in full length leather rifle case, the lid initialled 'J.M.S.'. Provenance : Air Marshal Sir John Maitland Salmond, GCB, CMG, CVO, DSO with Bar, and by decent to the vendor Joy Bell, Salmond's eldest grandchild. Other Notes: Salmond used this rifle for hunting whilst in South Africa and Nigeria at the beginning of his military career. Salmond graduated from Sandhurst in 1901 and saw action in the closing stages of the second Boer War with the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. He joined the West African Frontier Force in 1903 but was soon returned to England as medically unfit. Salmond learned to fly in 1912 and commanded several Royal Flying Corps formations during the First World War and became Director-General of Military Aeronautics at the War Office. Upon creation of the RAF he was promoted to General Officer Commanding the RAF in the Field leading the RAF Iraq Command in 1923/4 and helped suppress rebellious troops for King Feisal. He was appointed Chief of the Air Staff in 1930 relinquishing this post in 1933 when he was appointed Marshal of the Royal Air Force.

A LARGE GROUP OF SOUTH AMERICAN STIRRUPS AND SPURS, LATE 19TH CENTURY, including two pairs of Brazilian stirrups with bell-shaped base, pierced tread, a pair of slender side panels cast with foliage and a loop for suspension; a pair of Chilean clog-shaped stirrups, carved with bold designs of foliage and a flower at the front, bound with an iron strap incorporating a loop for suspension; two Chilean stirrups of clog shaped form, the front portion encased in a large pierced brass panel; a pair of small Chilean leather clog-shaped stirrups; two further pairs of South American white metal stirrups; a pair of Brazilian silver spurs, each with U-shaped heel band naturalistically modelled, moulded neck en suite incorporating a grotesque mask, multi-spiked rowel, complete with their straps; another pair of Brazilian white metal spurs, U-shaped heel bands cast with foliage and steel rowel; and nine further South American spurs, (27)
AN INFANTRY OFFICER`S `BELL-TOPPED` SHAKO AND PLUME, CIRCA 1829-35, of black felted material, decorated with black leather strips and with a black leather crown, the headband of black velvet, lacking chinstrap and scales, plate and all fittings and damaged, the diameter of the crown 11 inches, height 7 inches; the plume of white feathers on a whalebone shaft. This shako is of the pattern worn 1829 to 1844; in 1835 the plume was replaced by a ball tuft, dating this example between 1829 and 1835; it therefore seems most probable that this shako was worn by JRJ Hart as an officer with the Londonderry Legion.

A late 18th Century mahogany longcase clock by Jno. Marsh of Eastry, the 12ins square brass dial with wide chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and cast leaf, floral and scroll spandrels to the eight day two train movement striking on a bell, contained in plain mahogany case with moulded pediment and plain turned pillars to hood, plain trunk door, 75ins high. Note: John Marsh Senior recorded working Eastry 1771, died 1788
A 17th Century Bronze Mortar. The ring turned bell-shaped body decorated with a cast rosette beneath a crown (worn) and measuring 4 ins (10 cms) in height, 5 ins (13 cms) in diameter. An 18th century French/English iron spiral candlestick; the coiled strap stem with rotating candle height adjuster, a hook handle to the top and turned treen base 8½ ins (21.5 cms) high. A pair of late 18th Century steel scissors with decorative filigree handles and gilt nail head embellishments to the pivot, 7½ ins (19 cms) in length.
An Oval Horn Snuff Box & Seven Piece of Treen: A coconut shell goblet on a turned pedestal foot with a domed cover surmounted by a finial knop 9½ ins (24 cms) in height. A small brass mounted coconut shell cup with a groove turned body, brass strap handle, foot & rim connected by decorative straps inset with small turquoise stones 4½ ins (11.5 cms) in height. A coconut shell dish with four protuberant lugs to the sides bound in withies, 2½ ins (6 cms) high, 4½ ins (11.5 cms) in diameter. A miniature olive-wood goblet with bell shaped bowl inscribed Jerusalem 2¾ ins (7 cms) in height. A turned boxwood dish 1½ ins (4 cms) in height. A small barrel shaped treen box with screw on lid, 2½ ins (6.5 cms) high. And a turned treen goblet 5¼ ins (13.5 cms) high.
A Small Late 18th/Early 19th Century Scandinavian Folk Art Chest. The top having two recessed panels centred by an iron handle. The painted front fitted with a heart shaped iron escutcheon above a carved flower-head flanked by two panels emblazoned with hearts pierced by a sword and a three arrows defined against a sunken grove-carved ground, with further flanking panels of bell flowers. Raised on bun feet 11½ ins (32 cms) in height. 21½ ins (55 cms) in width, 12½ ins (32 cms) in depth.
A Large 18th/19th Century Wrought Iron Ten Light Wall Pricket. The centre stem surmounted by a turned inverted-bell wooden candle platform centred by an iron spike above three graduated tiers of similar prickets on upswept blade-knopped arms, with an applied carved wooden leafy embellishment between each tier, 51 ins (130 cms) in height. An 18th Century Longcase Clock, having an eight day movement striking a bell. The silvered chapter ring encircling a matted centre with a subsidiary seconds dial & calendar aperture, bordered by ornamental gilt brass spandrels. The case having a pagoda pediment hood surmounted by three urn finials above a glazed door flanked by columns. Measuring 83½ ins (212 cms) in height, 19½ ins (50 cms) in width, 10 ins (25 cms) in depth.
A 17th Century Oak Gateleg Table. The oval drop-leaf top raised by two swing gates above shaped brackets at both ends forming arches and centred by bell-form pendant finials. The paired baluster legs joined by short turned stretchers and raised on knopped feet. 30 ins (76 cms) in height, 59 ins (150 cms) in width, 65 ins (155 cms) in depth.
