He was one of the finest clockmakers in the North West, his work being of a very high standard, even in his thirty hour clocks. This example, number 561, is recorded and listed in Cave-Brown-Cave (BW) Jonas Barber Clockmaker of Winster , pg.230, where he lists the lives and work of the Barber family. A Fine and Rare Gold Repousse Pair Cased Repeating Verge Pocket Watch, signed John Ellicott, London, No.073, circa 1750, gilt fusee verge movement signed and numbered 073, three armed balance, diamond endstone, turned pillars, plunge pendant to operate repeat with two hammers striking on a bell, silver dust cover signed, enamel dial with Roman and outer Arabic numerals, blued steel beetle and poker hands, inner gold case with elaborately pierced borders and engraved with scroll, floral, birds and mask decoration, inside case back beneath the bell indistinctly stamped with maker's mark ?H, the fine outer repousse case with a square hinge, pierced sound fret scroll framed panels, borders and bezel decorated with figures, vases of flowers and birds, central classical scene with figures playing musical instruments within a woodland background, inside case back indistinctly stamped with maker's mark ?H, 51mm wide see illustration John Ellicott (London 1706-1772) was an eminent clock and watch maker of the 18th century. He conducted business from Austin Friars Street and later Swithin's Alley, Royal Exchange. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1738 and was best known for his work on temperature compensated pendulums and the cylinder escapement. A Fine and Rare Early 18th Century Gold Repeating Verge Pocket Watch, signed Daniel Quare, London, No.654, circa 1710, gilt fusee verge movement signed D Quare London and numbered 654, diamond endstone, three armed steel balance, turned pillars, dust cover signed DanL Quare London and inscribed inside 654, plunge pendant to operate repeat with two hammers striking on a bell, enamel dial with Roman and outer Arabic numerals, blued steel poker and tulip hands, inner gold case with elaborately pierced borders and engraved with scroll, floral, birds and mask decoration, case back numbered 654 below the pendant, inside case back beneath the bell stamped with case maker's mark WI for William Jaques and numbered 654, third case overlaid with leather and gilt metal pique pins to the borders, square hinge, with a gilt metal 18th century crank key (second case missing), 47mm wide see illustration Daniel Quare (1649-1724) was an important clock, watch and instrument maker. He was admitted to the Clockmakers' Company in 1671 and became a Master of the Company in 1708. After 1709 he went into partnership with one of his ex-apprentices, Stephen Horseman, who carried on the business after Quare's death, until going bankrupt in 1733. It is said that he made a repeating watch for William III and other clock and watch examples for the Royal family. W.I is the mark of William Jaques, watch case maker, born c. 1665, Free in the Clockmakers' Company 1687, died 1719. Jaques was one of the leading casemakers in London at the end of the 17th century and was one of the more prolific workshops of the time, making cases for makers such as Joseph Windmills, Simon Decharmes and John Bushman. 08.06.17, Third outer case with two splits to the leather on the bezel, case back with slight lifting to the leather, case is slightly springing when closed, gilt metal surfaces are slightly rubbed in parts, second case is missing, inner case with surface scratches, case back with very minor dents, dial with minor scratches, dial edge with small chips around 6, movement needs cleaning, repeat is not working when plunging the pendant, fusee chain is still visible but has come away and detached from the barrel, balance ticks when placing pressure on the contrate wheel, repeat mechanism wheels move when placing pressure on great wheel.
