The second is by Matthias Dunn (c. 1788-1869), the mining engineer and from 1850 one of the first government mines inspectors under the Inspection of Mines Act. Both are rare with Library Hub listing only 3 printed copies of the first (LSE, Newcastle University and Goldsmith's/Senate House libraries) and only the Goldsmith's/Senate House copy of the second.The third is a useful portrait of London coal merchants in the mid 18th century, first published in 1743-44 with a second edition in 1745; all editions are scarce.
SEVEN KODOGU (SWORD FITTINGS)Edo period (1615-1868), 18th to 19th centuryThe first a fuchi-gashira (hilt collar and pommel), shakudo nanako inlaid in relief of gold, silver, copper, and shibuichi with a male and female pheasant and grasses, converted into a small box, signed Yoshitaka with a kao (Ishiguro Yoshitaka, circa 1850, Haynes 12141); the second a kozuka (knife handle), copper, chiselled and inlaid in gold and silver with a pilgrim who has just stuck senjafuda (votive stickers) to a torii (shrine entrance), writing the kozuka's signature with a brush, with signature Shozui; the third a tsuba (hand guard), iron, in the form of a Buddhist temple bell, chiselled and inlaid in relief of gold, silver, copper, and shibuichi with two Noh actors, the reverse with a Hannya demon mask and rake, signed Fujiwara Katsunori (circa 1875, Haynes 02858), 9.6cm (3 13/16in) high; the fourth a tsuba, circular, shakudo nanako applied with a gilt rim, both sides chiselled in relief with a net, inlaid in relief of gold, silver, and copper with the fisherman protagonist of the Noh drama Hagoromo (The Feather Robe) wearing the magic garment he has found on Miho no Matsubara beach and looking up two chidori ('wave birds' or plovers), the reverse with clouds and three more birds, with signature Tsu Jinpo, 7.3cm (2 7/8in) high; the fifth a tsuba, aorigata (tapering shape), copper nanako, inlaid in relief gold, silver, shakudo, and copper with gokoku (the 'five grains'), signed Goto Mitsuyoshi with an elaborate kao (Goto Shinjo, 1780-1843, Haynes 08644), 6.1cm (2 3/8in) high; the sixth a tsuba, oval, sentoku with a stippled surface, inlaid in relief of gold, silver, and shakudo with a potted fukujuso (Adonis amurensis, literally 'plant of fortune and longevity') set out on New Year's Day, a shimenawa (sacred rope), and the rising sun, signed Mitsuyoshi with a kao, 6.3cm (2½in) high; the seventh a tsuba, rounded rectangular, shibuichi, chiselled and inlaid with wild chrysanthemums, susuki (plume grass), the crescent moon, and clouds, signed Shuzuiken Kiyoaki (circa 1875, Haynes 03227), 6.5cm (2 9/16in) high. It had been severely damaged in an attack on West India Docks (now Canary Wharf), the aircraft force landed at Stocks Green Road, Hildenborough, Tonbridge and the pilot Uffz. E. Kramer and crew were captured. The items included in the case were from the local farmhouse where the crew were detained.Kramer surrendered his Luger to Sir Eric Macfadyen (1879-1966) who at the time served as a Captain in the 21st Company, Home Guard. Macfadyen lived in Hildenborough, Tonbridge he had previously been an MP for Devizes, Wiltshire from 1923-24.

WWII 'Battle of Britain' Period Aerodrome Station Bell dated 1940, with small engraved motif, the crown stamped 'G.B.' and with broad arrow, with clapper, in good condition with no cracks or repairs, 28 cm high x 27 cm diameter QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: The vendor purchased this at a site clearance at Debden, Essex. Reputedly from RAF Debden which was the home of 85 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. The airfield was attacked by the Luftwaffe several times.

All viewings and collections are strictly by timed appointment - please see front of catalogue or contact the auction office for details.Provenance: Tonbridge Battle of Britain Museum, Malcolm Pettit.John Joseph Brimble a native of Knowle, Bristol (1915-1940) joined the RAFVR in 1938 as an Airman and untrained pilot, he was called to full-time service on 1 September 1939 and posted after training to No 4 Ferry Pilot Pool on 16 May 1940.Brimble was shot down in combat over Tonbridge on 14 September 1940 whilst serving with 73 Squadron. His Hurricane P2542 came down at Parkhouse Farm, Chart Sutton near Maidstone. An eyewitness account on the ground saw a Hurricane diving, apparently out of control, then momentarily pulling up before diving at full throttle and burying itself into a meadow.The aircraft was not identified at the time and partial remains were buried at Bell Road cemetery, Sittingbourne as 'an unknown airman'. Brimble was commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.Postwar research led to the realisation that the remains were that of Brimble and a named headstone was installed.The crash site was excavated on 14 September 1980 and more substantial remains were found (in the cockpit).His parents had passed away by this time but his only living relative Donald William Brimble was traced and after consultation with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, it was decided that the original grave and remains should be left undisturbed.The 1980 remains of Sergeant Brimble were buried with full military honours at Brookwood, Woking, Surrey on 16th October 1980 with his brother present.See lot 553.
