A white opaque-twist wine glass, late 18th century, the bell bowl supported on a centrally knopped stem filled with spiral threads, on conical foot, 17cm high; together with a mallet shaped decanter and stopper engraved with a fish hung from a chain and inscription “The Custom”; and a glass rummer with engraved inscription “Belle.Vue” (4)
An important Charless II hooded wall clock with unique hours and minutes indication, by “William Clay, King”s Street, Westminster”, circa 1665, the substantial posted movement with square section pillars riveted to the bottom plate and pinned through the top plate, with four-wheel trains, restored balance wheel escapement and countwheel strike on a bell mounted above, the brass backplate mounted with alarm mechanism (now incomplete), the 9.75 inch x 9 inch square brass dial engraved with Roman numeral hour chapters with tulip half hour markers and finely executed differing floral spray spandrels, the overlaid rotating plate with rosette and Roman numeral hour chapters with well-cut steel hand for the alarm to centre within pointer denoting hours on the chapter ring behind, within outer band mounted with twelve further steel pointers, each in turn denoting the minutes via a finely engraved silvered sector at 12 o”clock, the lower edge with full signature, the later walnut hooded case with shallow arch pediment over rectangular glazed front to the rising cover over moulded apron and foliate scroll carved brackets, 54cm high, 33cm wide. Wetherfield Collection. William Clay is recorded in Britten, F J “Old Clocks & Watches and Their Makers” as working 1645-80. The dial is illustrated in figure 634 with an explanation of how the hours and minutes are denoted. Britten also cites that a watch by him was given by Cromwell to Col. Bagwell at the siege of Clonmel. Baillie records his dates as 1652-80 and adds that there is a watch by him in the Taunton Museum. The style of the engraving in the spandrels is reminiscent of some of the early longcase clock dials by Edward East, whilst the half hour markers and the rosette engraved centre are more typical of second period lantern clock work, suggesting a date of around 1665.
A George III thirty-hour longcase clock movement and dial, circa 1770, the four-pillar outside countwheel bell-striking movement with anchor escapement and 10 inch square brass dial, the centre engraved with ships sailing past a fort, signed “Peter Selby, Wareham” beneath, with applied Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes and cockleshell pattern spandrel applied angles, 27.5cm high in total.
A figured mahogany longcase clock with moonphase, circa 1830, the four-pillar rack and bell striking movement with 12 inch white Arabic numeral break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds dial, arched calendar aperture and signed “Hill, Bristol” to centre, with rose painted spandrels and rolling moonphase to arch, the arched-top case with scallop shell and rosette carved fluted frieze over wavy edge door and fluted Corinthian pilasters to hood, over short flame figured trunk door flanked by quarter columns, on conforming plinth base with bracket feet, 215cm high. Probably William Hill who is recorded in Moore, A J “The Clockmakers of Bristol 1650-1900” as working from St Augustine”s Back 1848-65
A Victorian figured mahogany eight-day longcase clock, circa 1850, the four-pillar rack and bell striking movement with 12 inch circular white painted Roman numeral dial signed “W. Enock, Warwick”, in shallow break-arch pedimented case with turned pilasters to hood over short door and canted angles to trunk, on crossbanded plinth base with splayed bracket feet, 208cm high. William Enock is recorded in Loomes, Brian “Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Volume 2” as working in Warwick 1827-55
A mid 19th century Scottish mahogany drumhead longcase clock, the four-pillar rack and bell striking movement with 12 inch circular white Roman numeral dial with subsidiary calendar and seconds dials and signed “D. Kiddie, Glasgow” to centre, the case with foliate carved crest and tapered trunk fronted with raised panel door flanked by applied batons, on panel plinth base with canted skirt, 208cm high.
A Queen Anne ebony veneered eight-day basket-top bracket clock with pull quarter repeat, circa 1700, the twin fusee five finned pillar movement with restored verge escapement and pull quarter repeat on three bells with hour strike on a further bell, the symmetrical tulip and foliate engraved backplate signed “Robert Williamson, London” to a scroll borded reserve, the 7 inch square brass dial with rosette engraved centre and scroll decorated calender aperture to the matted centre within an applied Roman numeral silvered chapter ring with sword hilt half hour markers and Arabic five minutes, the angles with applied winged cherub head spandrels and with N/S lever above XII, the case with foliate pierced cherub and scroll decorated repousse basket and hinged carrying handle and later pineapple finials to top over front door with applied repousse mounts, on moulded base, case /with minor faults, movement with restorations, 37cm high excluding handle. Robert Williamson is recorded in Ballie, G H “Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World” as working (near Royal Exchange) 1666-1714
A George III brass-mounted mahogany eight-day bracket clock, circa 1790, the twin fusee five-pillar rack and bell striking movement with Rise/Fall regulation and shaped backplate engraved with a basket of flowers within foliate scroll borders, the ogee arch-top brass dial with 6 inch convex Roman numeral enamel centre signed “W”m Chapman, London” within foliate scroll engraved gilt brass spandrels, the arch with subsidiary Strike/Silent and regulation dials within conforming engraved infill, the bell-top case with five gilt ball finials and gilt mouldings over shaped brass-lined front door aperture flanked by stop-fluted canted angles and conforming break-arch side windows, on brass-bound base with ogee bracket feet, 49cm high. A late 19th century French gilt metal and polychrome painted porcelain mantel clock, the eight-day bell-striking movement with platform cylinder escapement and gilt Roman numeral dial, in tabernacle form case with putto decorated cupola and turned finials over Cupid and Psyche figural painted panels to sides and back, on conforming plinth base with ball feet, bears underglaze blue beehive mark to base, 45cm high.
