Mathaus HeilmannMainz, Germany No 194 c1785A rare early grand pianoforte in a fielded panelled walnut case raised on four slender square tapered legs; Length 213cm, Width 95cm, Depth of case 24cm, Height 70cm. The sycamore nameboard bearing a large paper label with the inscription Mathaeus Heilmann Hof-Orgel und Instrumenten Macher in Mainz No 194. Compass 5 octaves FF to f3. Current pitch A=435. Two knee levers below the keyboard, which has ebony naturals and bone covered beech accidentals. Single bridge and with a Viennese action. Four pedals operating Keyboard Shift, Moderator, Semi-Moderator and Damper Lift. Complete with internal pine dust cover. Graf pianos were favoured and used by Beethoven, Chopin, Clara Schumann, among others. A Doulton Burslem Luscian Ware ovoid vase with bell shaped floral painted neck and twin handles, decorated with 'After The Dance' picture depicting seated woman, signed Leslie Johnson, marked and titled to the base, height 20.5cm. CONDITION REPORT: A minute chip to the rim, and the vase itself is dirty. Light surface scratches and very light wear to the gilt.
