A very rare early 18th century pewter and brass-inlaid Italian table clock with six-hour dialFrancesco Papillion, FirenzeThe break-fronted case surmounted by an elaborate cast handle over a stepped caddy top with moulded edges over the architrave with an inset silk-backed blind sound fret, the sides with long glazed panels, on a moulded base and bun feet, the 5 inch silvered dial marked I to VI framed by a minute ring marked in tens for each hour, with single blued steel hand, mounted on an engraved gilt brass dial plate signed in an engraved cartouche within a pattern of strapwork, scrolls and flowers on a matted ground, the small rectangular movement plates united by four baluster pillars pinned through the backplate, with single 'tandem barrel' driving both wheel trains, the going train with verge escapement (the 'scape wheel mounted at an angle) to a short verge bob pendulum mounted on silk within cycloidal cheeks, the strike train sounding on a vertical bell. Ticking and striking, together with a winding key. 49cms (1ft 7ins) high.Footnotes:There is little information about Francesco Papillion. There are only a few signed clocks by him which include a night clock in the Getty Museum and an alarm watch in the British Museum. Archival records in Florence show that Papillion entered the clockmaker's guild in 1705.The six hour clock was used in Italy, especially in the Papal States, until the end of the 18th century, when Napoleon replaced it with the 12 hour system. A fine and rare late 17th century French brass-inlaid ebony and tortoiseshell 'Pendule Religieuse' of two-week durationPierre Le Maire, ParisThe rectangular case (possibly from the Boulle workshop) with twin suspension eyes and bell mounted to the top, obscured by the shallow arch inlaid with flowing foliage between a pair of pedestals supporting swagged urns, the sides with tall narrow arched glazed panels, the solid rear door veneered to the inside in book-matched walnut, the front door lock opened with the winding key with an intricate inlaid border and finely moulded frame, on a moulded base, the 8 inch chapter ring with each minute hand engraved to the outer edge framing the Roman numerals, meeting arrow-head half-hour markers, and quarter hour band, set above the oval gilt brass signature cartouche supported by a pair of heralds, all on a black velvet background, the square brass 14-day movement united by five vase shaped pillars pinned through the backplate, the going train with verge escapement and short bob pendulum on silk between cycloidal cheeks, the strike train with solid outside numbered countwheel with delicate blued steel gate, sounding on the bell above via the vertical hammer with octagonal head. Ticking and striking, together with a winding key. 45cms (17.5ins) highFootnotes:While best known for the highly elaborate furniture supplied to the King and Court, Andre Charles Boulle was also known to supply numerous clock makers with the more 'standard' clock cases of the time - Reinier Plomp in 'Early French Pendulum Clocks 1658-1700' lists numerous makers known to have been clients of the Boulle workshop, including Louis Barroneau, Joseph Barroneau, Pierre du Chesne, Antoine Gaudron, Pierre Gaudron, Nicolas Gribelin, Mathieu Margeurite, Balthazar (II) Martinot, Giles (II) Martinot, Henry Martinot, and Isaac and Jacques Thuret. His workshop was centrally located and just as in other major cities of the time, artistic centres of interdependent trades soon evolved. Each craftsman relying on several neighbouring related trades such as case makers, gilders, bell founders, engravers etc. Pierre Le Maire worked in St Germain, Paris circa 1675 along with his son Jean. His clockmaking neighbours included Pierre de Baufre, Isaac-Paul Du Hamel, Jacques Gosselin, Nicolas Hanet and Nicolas Gribelin (a known Boulle client). A minor quirk of his workshop was to use the movement winding key as the case door key. The Le Maires were Protestants and following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, he and his son were imprisoned in St Germain Abbey. A fine and rare third quarter of the 17th century brass-mounted ebony 'Pendule Religieuse'Balthazar Martinot, ParisThe rectangular case with twin suspension loops to the rear, the pierced cresting obscuring the bell behind, over a moulded cornice, shaped glazed side panels and a moulded plinth raised on turned feet, the front door with applied pierced cast border, the rear door veneered to the inside with walnut in an ebony crossbanded border, the rectangular dial hinged on the left hand side and mounted to each corner with a foliate cast 'spandrel' framing the elaborate hinged signature plaque (with pendulum slot behind) and the 7 inch chapter ring with each minute hand engraved to the periphery enclosing the Roman hours, star-shaped half-hour markers and inner quarter hour track, with good pierced fancy hands, all mounted on dark velvet, the small rectangular movement united by four ring-turned pillars pinned to the rear, both wheel trains wound via a single 'tandem winding' barrel, the going with verge escapement and short bob pendulum suspended within cylcoidal cheeks set on an elaborate cock, the verge arbor set on another separate cock, the strike train with solid outside countwheel with each hour numbered, signed along the lower edge of the plates. His clocks had beautiful cases, notably those made by Jean-Michel Ziegler and André-Charles Boulle, and were sold to royalty. A late 17th century and later gilt brass mounted ebony and ebonised table clockChristopher Gould, London, with high quality 19th century replacement movement The case with later inverted bell top, four finials and a bold handle over rectangular side panels containing cast brass mounts, the front door with silk-backed sound fret and cast escutcheons, the 7 inch square brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels framing the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with minute and quarter-hour tracks, the matted centre with curved (now filled and engraved) mock pendulum aperture, and decorated chamfered date aperture, the replacement movement of substantial construction, with thick plates united by five heavy turned pillars, twin gut fusees, the strike train with brass tear-drop shaped hammer head acting on a bell, the going train with anchor escapement. Ticking and striking, with pendulum and two case keys. 41cms (16ins) highFootnotes:Christopher Gould was a maker of great repute who was free of the Clockmakers Company in 1682. He is perhaps best known for the exquisite inlaid cases that so many of his clocks inhabit. In the 19th century it was not unheard of for clockmakers to replace entire movements rather than attempt to restore them. The movement of the current lot is better than many of the time, with good brass work and well finished trains. Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy is perhaps best known for this practice of substitution, famously exchanging the movement from a Thomas Tompion table clock reputedly presented by King Charles II to Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland. The receipt mentions a 'steel spring' - a gong in modern parlance - to sound the hours instead of a bell. This is a very early use of a gong on a longcase clock- they are never common, and those that do appear are generally from the latter half of the 19th century. It appears that Mr Spiers, or another owner, had a change of heart and decided to substitute the gong for a bell at some stage. The 6 inch square gilt brass dial signed 'Tho. Tompion Londini Fecit' along the lower edge within a single line border enclosing the winged cherub's head spandrels, the silvered chapter ring with five-minute Arabic numerals, minute track and Roman hours divided by meeting arrow-head half-hour markers and inner quarter hour track, the finely matted centre with good blued steel hands, and typical three latched dial feet to the movement.The movement united by six latched, knopped and ringed pillars, the frontplate measuring 15cms x 21cms (6ins x 8.25ins) and cut to accommodate part of the elaborate brass and steel quarter striking train, the larger backplate measuring 16.5cms x 21cms (6.5ins x 8.25ins) cut with an arched aperture to accommodate the protruding hour bell, and further cut for the pivotted quarter striking levers, signed across the centre 'Tho Tompion Londini Fecit' in a rectangle, the lower third of the plate decorated with symmetrical flower heads on stalks emanating from the lower edge, the upper portion of the plate with a further six flowerheads within foliage. All are in ebony Phase One cases and all have the bell set into a cut-out aperture in the large backplate. Two emanate from two of the great 20th century collections, the first from The Wetherfield Collection, inventory number 23, which with the added complication of an alarm train sold at Christies, London, June 2011 for £289,000. The second from the Iden collection, (illustrated in Percy Dawson's overview published by the Antique Collectors Club 1987 on page 87) which is now in private hands.The cut out was necessary because at this time Tompion used a backplate that was larger than the frontplate. It is a rare feature, but others are known, the latest known to us dates to circa 1687. R.W. Symonds in his standard work illustrates three backplates with cut-outs for the bell:Figure 174 - the backplate of clock number 22, the angle of the shoulders are comparable with the current lot, however the repeat slots run all the way to the edge of the plate, the signature sits within a full pattern of flowers and foliage. Figure 176 - the backplate of clock number 66 has smaller, shallower shoulders and the repeat is activated via a Z-bar. He was one of the outstanding clockmakers of the 18th century, producing a large number of high quality clocks for the home market and export, his work was particularly valued by the Spanish Royal family. He developed his own form of temperature compensated pendulum and was instrumental in the perfection of the cylinder escapement. He was clockmaker to King George III, a position which paid £150 per annum. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society on the 26th of October 1738 and published articles on clocks and an equation of time table in the Philosophical Transactions for the Society. He supplied portable regulators to astronomers notably; Nevil Maskelyne, Charles Mason and James Cook for the recording of the transit of Venus. Ellicott was a keen astronomer and observed the transit of Venus in 1761 from an observatory built in his home in Hackney. He worked from St Swithins Alley, Royal Exchange, London. A weight driven German clockUnsignedThe iron frame consisting of four worked rectangular-section corner uprights pinned top and bottom to the horizontal frames at 45 degrees and rising towards the upper bell-supporting structure held in tension between the four fancy quatrefoil finials, the 5.5inch diameter heavy cast bell secured via a substantial lug pinned from above, and with turned scored decoration. The movement with all wheels and pinions of iron mounted between three upright flat bars and two horizontal.The going train of three wheels terminating in an upright verge crown wheel and a shaped foliot bar with movable timing weights to the tips, suspended on silk. The rear of the crownwheel arbor and the bottom end of the vertical verge are both set in U-shaped arms rivetted to the rear of the centre bar, the top of the verge is held in a similar curved arm rivetted to the upright cock pinned to the horizontal centre bar above. The strike train with outside countwheel with internal teeth driven by a 6-leaf pinion, overlift is by a shaped cam on the second arbor with twin slots to allow for locking. The hours are struck via a vertical hammer with shaped shaft in order to give a 'stop' against the upper horizontal frame, with very heavy shaped head and a wire link to a horizontal leaf spring set to the base.
