A SOUTH GERMAN QUARTER REPEATING TABLE TABLE CLOCK BY PETER KRENCKEL EICHSTATT, C1710, the top of the finely engraved gilt brass case with alarm disc and silver gilt and chempleve enamel chapter ring, the dial within a rim with four small levers inscribed SCHLAGT/NIT SCHLAG/VIERTEL SCHLAG/BEY VIERTEL DIE STUNT SCHLAG, the twin fusee movement with verge escapement and engraved barrels visible through six glazed lights, the backplate signed PETER KRENCKEL EUCHSTET. having pierced and engraved balance cock and foot, the three hammer heads each in the form of a grotesque head, with silvered regulation, chiselled blued steel screws, bell secured on the underside by straps within three bifurcated scroll feet alternating with turned pendants, 9cm h, 10.5 x 10.5cm, in the original leather covered softwood travelling box with engraved brass flap to the lid and three pierced panels to the sidesProvenance: Private family ownership since the early 20th century.Peter Krenckel was born at Hattnau, Bavaria in 1687. He was either an apprentice of or assistant to Wilhelm Koberle in Eichstatt whose daughter he married in 1714. Krenckel died in 1730. Movement not in working order and requires attention but apparently complete. Clean and unrestored. One of the feet with stress crack, the other two feet with old steel repair inside the curve, otherwise in fine unrestored condition. The case with only small pieces of the dry and powdery leather covering remaining. Fresh to the market and not hitherto offered for sale since acquired by the family in the early 20th c

Woolf's signature here matches her signature on some other books signed in the later 1920s-30s, for example: on a 1927 copy of 'Kew Gardens', and on a 1937 copy of 'The Years', both of which are currently for sale elsewhere on the market (2)
