Mary Swanzy HRHA (1882-1978) Cat in the Suburbs Oil on board, 50 x 60cm (20 x 24'') Exhibited: Mary Swanzy Retrospective, Hugh Lane Gallery, June 1968, Cat. No. 65 The image of a white cat appears in several pictures by Swanzy, including 'The Clown', 'Cat on the Terrace' and the present picture, suggesting that she may have owned such a pet in her later life, or remembered it from her childhood. Her view in all these pictures is plainly one of affection. 'Cat on a Terrace' included in the Mary Swanzy Exhibition at The Dawson Gallery in 1974, shows the animal sleeping, head resting on a ledge, facing towards the viewer, with its tail curled beside it. The sleeping cat in the present picture is viewed from the side. Its tail is curled beside it, but its front paw it tucked op, so that its pink pads are visible. It is evidently a particular cat for it has slight tortoiseshell markings on its head, and a pink collar with a golf bell around its neck. The cracked gatepost on which the cat sits, and the crumbling gateposts and wall with faded posters behind the old village, and neglected orchard of trees, are suggestive of neglect and decay, of times passed and memories of earlier days: perhaps a crumbling demesne which Swanzy remembered from her childhood in Ireland or from life in England, combined with a pretty Mediterranean or Balkan village with red and blue roofs, and orchards, remembered from her travels after the First World War. In spite of the friendly cat in the foreground, there is a faded, nostalgic mood, empty of people telling of other days, the losses of War, and the departure of friends. The run down setting is contrasted by the straight lines of the avenue that runs into the distance. Swanzy employs a soft palette of whites, pale pinks, yellows, pale greens and reds, to convey a faded dreamy atmosphere. 'Cat in the Suburbs' was included in the large Mary Swanzy Retrospective Exhibition held at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin in 1968. Julian Campbell
William Conor RHA RUA ROI (1881-1968) The Horse Parade Wax crayon, 54 x 42cm (21¼ x 16½'') Signed Provenance: With Bell Gallery, Belfast, label verso. Exhibited: Dublin, Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition 1933, cat. no. 40, priced £120 Before the use of motorised vehicles became widespread in Ireland, the horse fair played an essential part within the community. Work horses were needed to help farm the land, cart produce to and from the markets and to pull public carriages. Horses were everywhere and the demand for them was great. Some fairs, such as the one held in Belfast, attracted international attention, with buyers coming from England and Scotland to purchase superior Irish stock. On a social level, the fair offered an event at which people could meet, trading stories and titbits about their lives. For an artist, such as William Conor, who was propelled to portray the working classes in hearty animation, the horse fair offered the perfect inspiration.

A George I walnut eight-day longcase clock, James, Leicester, London, circa 1725, the five finned pillar rack and bell striking movement with anchor escapement for regulation by seconds pendulum, the 12 inch brass break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds dial and calendar aperture to the matted centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers, Arabic five minutes to outer track and signed James Leicester, ye Strand, London to lower margin, with pierced steel hands and gilt mask and scroll cast spandrels to angles beneath arch centred with subsidiary Strike/Silent dial flanked by conforming mounts, in a case with foliate fret fronted domed caddy box upstand over moulded cornice and hinged break-arch glazed dial aperture flanked by three-quarter columns and rectangular side windows with conforming quarter columns set against bargeboards to the rear, the trunk with concave throat over herringbone-bordered book-matched veneered rectangular door over conforming reduced plinth base, (generally distressed, lacking pendulum and weights), 241cm (95ins) high. James Leicester is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working from circa 1710 until 1729 when he was declared bankrupt.Condition Report: Movement appears essentially complete and in sound original condition with no obvious alterations, significant repairs or replacements although the pendulum suspension block is later and is generally in dirty/neglected condition. The dial is also in sound original albeit dirty/neglected condition, the seconds hand is missing and both the hour and minute hands have been repaired; there is also a very small chip to the lower left hand corner of the dial plate and the chapter ring is somewhat rubbed. The movement rests on an old seatboard which has packing slips applied to the underside where it rests on the case uprights (cheeks) this would indicate that the movement and dial are most likely not original to the case. The case is generally structurally sound and fundamentally original but presents in unrestored and somewhat distressed condition. The superstructure to the hood is lacking part of its front fretwork and the quadrants above the dial now have applied wooden panels where there would have been frets. The rear quarter columns are replacements and one is lacking its capital. The side apertures have been blanked-off with wooden panel inserts. The mask around the dial (behind the hood door) has additions to the veneer overlap which adds to the view that the movement and dial are probably not original to the case. Faults to hood otherwise limited to bumps, scuffs shrinkage and veneer and moulding chips. The trunk has losses to the mouldings of the front door as well as overall wear, chips and losses to the veneers. The base is basically structurally intact but has significant wear to the lower edge as well as large losses to the veneers and chips to the mouldings.Clock does not have pendulum, weights, case keys or winder.
