A George III oak and mahogany longcase clock, the 28cm brass dial with silvered chapter ring inscribed Ashton, Ashburn (sic) Roman numerals, date aperture, 30-hour movement striking on a bell, the case with swan neck pediment, shaped rectangular door to waist centred by an oval shell patera, bracket feet, 207cm high, c.1800The signature is that of Samuel Ashton the younger born at Macclesfield 1828, apprenticed to father at Tideswell 1742-49, and moved to Ashbourne c. 1750, leaving his brother Aaron to succeed to their father's business at Tideswell. The two son,s Thomas and Martin, the former working from Tideswell and the latter in partnership with his father from 1791 and his successor until his own death in 1829 [Craven, M & Hughes, R G 'Clockmakers & Watchmakers of Derbyshire' (Mayfield 1998) 57-58.] Condition Report: Generally good. Antique 18ct Yellow Gold Bar Bell Brooch. The brooch surmounted with antique Greek coins, approx 45 mm, approx 8 gms (tested), the first coin depicting a feminine profile and a figure riding a dolphin to the reverse, the other coin is a masculine profile and horse and chariot to the reverse. The coins are tested 18/22ct.

Shannon (Claude Elwood). 'Communication theory of secrecy systems', [in:] The Bell System Technical Journal, volume 28, no. 4, October 1949, the entire issue with the article by Claude Shannon on pages 656-715, original printed pale blue wrappers, ink ownership signature at head of upper wrapper, a little browned and faded, lower outer corner slightly creased, slim 8vo In this paper Shannon discusses cryptography from the viewpoint of information theory, and it is, arguably, the foundational treatment of modern cryptography. Bell, 1852, [2], xi (mispaginated, actually i-vi, ix-xi), [1], 106pp., half-title present, lacking final leaf of text (page 107) provided in facsimile, dampstain throughout volume, occasional pencil scribbles to few leaves, front endpaper with ownership signatures (including ealy signature of an Arthur D. Hughes), lacking rear free endpaper, original gilt & blind blocked blue cloth, spine worn with slight loss mostly at head and foot, few marks, slim 8vo Scarce first book on rowing at Cambridge. Robert Coombes (1808-1860) was a distinguished Thames waterman, oarsman and sculler. His first public race took place in 1838 and he was Champion of the Thames from 1846-1852. His knowledge was exploited successively by the Oxford (1840) and Cambridge (1846, 1849 both races) Boat Race crews. Cambridge asked him to coach again in 1852, but a dispute broke out about the use of professional trainers, with the result that for many years both sides avoided professionals and men of working class origins. Provenance: James Gee Pascoe Crowden CVO (1927-2016). He was an English former oarsman who competed for Great Britain in the 1952 Summer Olympics. The vice-president of the British Olympic Association and a Steward of Henley Regatta. He also served as High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely in 1970 and Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire from 1992 to 2002. (1)

It contains seminal papers by Stiblitz, Mauchly, Eckert, Goldstine, Hartree and others. The hand-picked course members included Jay Forrester of MIT, Cuthbert Hurd of IBM, Claude Shannon of Bell Labs and Maurice Wilkes of Cambridge. A further three volumes were published and all volumes are exceedingly rare. Mimeographed copies of some individual lectures were also printed in small numbers and distributed to some participants for review or as a courtesy before this publication. An edited reprint of the lectures, with historical introduction and notes, was published in 1985 by MIT Press & Tomash Publishers as No. 9 in the 'Charles Babbage Institute Reprint Series for the History of Computing'. Back foot is loose, will just need tightening.It is working and striking ok. Gilt is ok but needs a gentle clean. Dial is in good condition and has no cracks or chips.
19th Century French Empire gilt and dark patinated bronze mantel clock, with a female figure head surmount above a tapering body, raised on claw feet on a rectangular plinth base mounted with eagles, the enamel dial with Arabic and Roman numerals inscribed Vaillant a Paris, the two train movement striking on a bell CONDITION REPORT Overall in good condition.I believe case has been cleaned at some point with some light cleaning to gilding, which appears to have been lacquered.Chip to enamel dial near winding hole, hand glued in position for a reason I cannot quite see but I expect it will need repairing or replacing.There appears to be no fixings for the glass cover to the back and movement is working but needs a clean.There is no signature beneath the bell.This is a private consignment.In my opinion I believe it not to have been changed, I can't see any alterations or marks to give evidence of replacement.17.25ins high x 8.5ins wide x 6ins deep
