LATE REGENCY MAHOGANY, EBONY, AND BRASS INLAID MANTEL CLOCK, BY MOLYNEUX, LONDON EARLY 19TH CENTURY the arched case enclosing a cream enamelled dial with Roman numerals, with rubbed maker’s marks, above a brass-lined and inlaid panel flanked by brass flower basket ring handles, above a brass star-inlaid base, raised on a plinth; the twin-train eight-day movement striking a bell, the back plate signed MOLYNEUX/ LONDON (24cm wide, 36cm high, 15cm deep) Footnote: Provenance : The Earls of Crawford and Balcarres, Balcarres House, Fife, Scotland Note : It is unknown when exactly Robert Molyneux came to London to be a pupil of the famous watchmaker Thomas Earnshaw, but around 1800 he went on to establish his own business, and in 1805 he was asked to be an adjudicator on Earnshaw’s inventions, a sign that his skills were highly valued. By the mid-1840s Molyneux had won the first place in the Premium Trials three times, a competition instituted by the Board of Longitude to encourage makers to introduce improvements to chronometers, and his products were used by the British Navy. Although the major part of Molyneux’s business was concerned with watches and chronometers, he also made longcase regulators and some bracket clocks, like the example in this lot.

A Charles II bell metal mortar dated 1667, with the letters N over RE, possibly the maker Edward Neale of Burford, also decorated with a fleur-de-lis with crown above and rose with crown above and with pestle. Mortar diameter 14.5 cm, height 11 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Both the pestle and mortar are in generally very good condition. There are numerous old dings and marks but no significant structural issues. The top lip to the mortar does have one indentation where it may have been dropped an awful long time ago.
Bells Whisky comprising a millennium 2000 70 cl bottle and six bell shaped whisky decanters commemorating the marriage of HRH Prince Andrew with Miss Sarah Ferguson 1986, Christmas editions 1990, 1993 and 1994 and a limited edition decanter for Christmas 2000. 70/75 cl, all bottles sealed and in original packaging.
A gilded brass four glass clock, of oval form, the enamel dial with Brocot escapement and with eight day movement chiming on a bell and with mercury compensating pendulum, the glass with bevelled edges. 20 cm wide, 30 cm high (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is in extremely good condition all round. There is no tarnishing to the case. The front door panel and both side panels are in good order with no chips. The rear glass panel has a very small chip to the bottom left hand corner of the door. This is barely visible. The movement strikes on the full and half when manually advanced. The movement has been running for the past 10 minutes and appears to be ticking away as it should. The two glass tubes that house the mercury are discoloured at the top. The chapter ring has a hairline crack running from the bottom edge below the numeral 6 through the minute markers to just below the numeral 5. There are two further faint hairline cracks running from the outer to inner edge of the chapter ring.
Two WW2 1939-45 RAF Benevolent Fund Bellscast alloy bells with relief on leaders. The lower rim of one bell with “Cast With Metal From German Aircraft Shot Down Over Britain”. The handles with central “V” for Victory. Both complete with internal clangers. Together with a cast alloy, bomber aircraft. 3 items.
A retro glass two-part lamp shade comprising smaller bell-shaped section attaching to a large shallow dish with yellow metal rim, diameter approx 55cm. CONDITION REPORT Overall good condition. There are minor losses to the finish of the brass rim and minor chipping to the joining sections. Sold electrically untested.
A large Victorian Parian group of Diana seated on a tree stump with a deer and fawn, modelled by Charles Bell Birch for the Art Union of London after the original sculpture of 1866, stamped verso C. B. Birch. Sc, height 50cm. CONDITION REPORT Some age-related wear, mainly in the form of surface scratches, small areas of discolouration. No other obvious signs of damage or repair.
