A rare late 15th/early 16th century continental silver gilt and gilt copper chalice, probably Italian, the silver gilt bell shaped bowl with a gilt copper sleeve to the lower half supported on a gilt copper knopped stem chased with flowers, leaves and arches, terminating in a hexagonal base with a lozenge and pellet border, with alternate panels engraved with the sacred monogram, 19.5cm high fitted in a later octagonal oak case, velvet lined. This chalice formerly belonged to an associate of Cardinal Hume. We would like to thank Tim Schroder for his help in attributing this piece. Amongst the many important exhibitions that he has curated was `Treasures of the English Church; Sacred Gold &Silver 800-2000` at Goldsmiths Hall in 2008.
