Apulian mid-4th cent. B.C.. Clay. H. 28.2 cm A thick-walled bell-krater on a robust foot. On the obverse, a seated maenad to the left holding a beribboned thyrsos. A languid, youthful satyr stands before her, offering a shallow tray with one hand and carrying a situla in the other. On the reverse, two draped youths facing one another, one leaning on a staff. Large palmettes beneath each handle. Laurel leaves beneath the rim; band of meanders interupted by saltire squares forming the ground line. Condition: reassembled from fragments. Formerly priv. coll. E.W., Riehen; Acquired by Auktion Koller 34, Nr. 2529, Nov. 1975. Thence by descent in the family. Exhibited in Solothurn "Antike Kunst aus Privatbesitz, Nr. 165."

A 19th century Meissen porcelain 'Prometheus' mantel clock, of impressive proportions, the case surmounted with figure of Zeus brandishing fire with attendant eagle over the convex white enamel dial with gilt brass bezel, all in floral encrusted surround, the base with scene of Hercules freeing the imprisoned Prometheus amidst flowers and foliage, the whole decorated in bright enamels and heightened in gilt, with underglaze blue crossed sword mark verso, the clock dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, twin winding holes for a French brass eight day cylinder movement by Henry Marc of Paris and numbered 61306, striking on a bell, with pendulum, h.70cmCondition report: Small area of restoration to crown.Minor chips to end of torch in his left hand.Some chips to applied flower heads but generally good.Some flower heads from 4 – 8 o’clock restored.Hairline to Hercules right leg.Scratch to Hercules shoulder.Hairline visible to inside of back, but not to front.Eagle’s left wing restored.Otherwise figures and bird appear good and complete.Glaze, enamels and gilt excellent, bright and vibrant.Made in two sections, with signs of the join.Movement good, with pendulum.

A varied selection of mostly hardback volumes; including a modern 'Times Concise Atlas of the World', 'Shakespeare's Plays & Poems', illustrated by Charles Knight, 1866, a large hardback volume 'Modern Farriery' by W. J. Miles M.R.C.V.S.L., together with other volumes etc.Shakespeare volume is labelled Oxford Local Examination 1868 Junior Candidate Prize 2nd Division, Manchester Centre. It is quite foxed on the first few pages, it is complete in one volume and is the 9th edition, published by bell and Daldy, 186 Fleet Street and Covent Garden in 1866. The pages inside look pretty good and the back pages as well are quite foxed also. In terms of the condition of the hardcover around the edges there are some scuffs commensurate with age and some scuffs on the spine itself but overall the gilding looks nice and bright against the red background etc.
