Ca. Late 4th-3rd Century BC.A finely modelled pottery krater with a large, inverted bell-shaped body with a broad rim. Two upraised handles are attached to the sides. The vessel stands upon a flared, pedestal foot. The decoration adorning its surface contains horizontal bands of laurel leaves at the top and a wave pattern at the bottom. Side A of the krater depicts the winged figure of Hypnos holding a trident and side B portrays a robed, standing female, probably representing the deceased. Ca. Late 4th-3rd Century BC.A pottery bell krater featuring two lateral handles, a broad opening, and a circular foot. The surface is adorned with a black glaze and red-figure scenes. The obverse of the krater depicts a Dionysiac scene, illustrating two maenads and a satyr approaching one of them. Maenad to the right, is shown holding a thyrsus—a pole entwined with ivy and grapevines, topped with a pine cone. The reverse presents a portrayal of three youth figures dressed in classical attire, leaning on long staffs. Both scenes are bordered by a laurel wreath above and a meander band below. Ca. 1000-600 BC.A Luristan cast bronze cage bell that features delicate openwork and suspension loop for wearability. The bell stands on three protruding feet on the underside of the cage, and contains two ovoid stonse that allows one to shake it and hear a metallic sound. This charming pendant could have been attached to horse trappings, as the Luristan people were nomads that commonly ornamented their animals in bronze attachments and fittings. dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: North Africa, Fine, two-stage barrel, faceted at the first part and then round, with wide, round bell-mouthing. The rear part and the nozzle finely inlaid in gold with frames featuring geometric and floral motifs; central band with a writing in Arab characters and then, after the girdle outlined by a frame, decorated with floral motifs ending in a crescent with a flower in it. Tang inlaid en suite. Modern-style lock carved with racemes. The spring of the batterie with a brass bridle plaque worked en suite. Working mechanism. Wooden full stock decorated with bone inlays surrounded by small brass studs. Iron mounts, fake wooden ramrod. length 80,5 cm.

dating: late 18th Century provenance: Italy, Three-stage, iron barrel with octagonal breech then with two circular segments ending with rings, circular bell-mouthed nozzle. Crowned marks 'V' and 'P' and an 'R' at the base; a signature with traces of silvering (possibly 'IUNO') on the back. Remains of various gold-inlays decorated with trophies and floral motifs at the breech, the nozzle, the girdles and on the tang. Rounded lock plate decorated with frames, featuring the signature 'G. BANCHI' in the centre. The parts of the fire striker with toothed borders in relief. Working mechanism. Wooden full stock with signs of use and time (fore-end with restoration near the mouthpiece) decorated with fine silver-inlaid spirals at the handle. Silver shield as well as the butt plate, also engraved with trophies, and the trigger guard, with friezes in relief. Tipped, iron ramrod complete with cartridge extractors. length 76,5 cm.

Flintlock signed 'CLOUGH & SON', engraved with floral motifs and provided with anti-friction and sealing systems, and secure lock. dating: about 1680 provenance: Central Italy, Heavy, two-stage, smoothbore barrel, first octagonal signed and dated 'LEONARDO DONADO CAP 1680' with remains of a mark and rear sight, then round and with strongly bell-mouthed nozzle (missing foresight), nozzle opening approx. 38 mm; lock with archaic Roman-style flintlock lock plate; heavy wooden stock (moth holes and small defects) with iron mounts, at the centre two plates with fretwork for a gun-fork. Iron ramrod. Very rare. length 180.5 cm.

Full stock made of blackened wood, scales engraved with bone inlays; sphere-shaped pommel bearing in the centre a bone medallion with the Saxon royal coat of arms. Bone-tipped wooden ramrod and iron cartridge extractor. Interesting puffer for the personal guard of the Princes of Saxony Christian I and II. This rare weapon has the barrel with the same marks as the puffer of the previous lot, only the date is from the year before. Although the lock and the stock show slight differences, there is a probability that the two puffers formed a single pair. length 55 cm.

BETJEMAN (John). Summoned by Bells, Authors Presentation Copy, published by John Murray, 1960 first trade edition, Inscribed by John Betjeman in blue ink on half title, To Mrs. Stokes from her old friend John Betjeman with happy memories of Coolgrena (p 89) 1969, an autobiographical poem which gives an account of the future Poet Laureates early life, black and white illustrations and bell patterned endpapers by Michael Tree, printed on antique laid paper, original green calf decorated with bell pattern, spine lettered in gilt, 8vo. Provenance: Inscribed to the vendors grandmother, Mrs. Stokes, who lived in a house called Coolgrena, Trebetherick, North Cornwall. Sir John Betjeman spent many holidays in Trebetherick and later moved there with his family. The author makes reference to Coolgrena and Mrs. Stokes in this poem on pages 88-89 What though the Stokeses were a field away? Biddy would scream with laughter as Id chargeUp the steep corner of Coolgrena drive . . .Sir John Betjeman is buried at St. Enodocs Church, Trebetherick. Condition Report: overall good condition with strong inscription.
