A Rare Pair Of French Cased Flintlock Four-Barrelled Box-Lock Tap-Action Pistols Of SmallboreSilver Petite Garantie Mark For Paris, No. 10, Circa 1820Each with turn-off barrels engraved around the muzzles and numbered from '1' to '8', at the breech end, border engraved breeches numbered to correspond and decorated with scrolling foliage over each side, actions engraved with foliage centred on a differing mask with a basket of fruit on his head, engraved thumbpiece safety-catches also locking the steels, engraved trigger-guards, figured butts each carved with a panel of scales on both sides, a petalled design behind the action on both sides, and with a line of bell-flowers down the back, the flat ovoidal pommels each carved with an arcaded border and set with a silver neo-classical female mask in relief: in original lined and fitted case covered in red leather, the interior of the lid with red leather straps for the steel bullet mould and barrel wrench, the exterior with stamped and gilt decorative border 3 cm. barrels Footnotes:A handwritten note in Spanish and dated 5 July 1960 claims that the pistols were a gift from Napoleon I to Melendez Valdes, the poet. A further note reads 'This small pair of four barrel flintlock tap action pistols in a red leather case were brought back from Spain by an American Colonel and exchanged for a Colt pocket revolver - I don't of course guarantee the attribution but they are at least contemporary and much in the Boutet style. The inscription in Roosevelt´s hand is in French and states `To A.R. packer worker, souvenir from the President of the United States´. Also dated 6th November 1905 in the President´s hand.
